Vietnam Space Week takes place from June 5 to 9 in Hau Giang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Binh Dinh to introduce achievements, connect young people with NASA, and inspire scientific research.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Computer Association, Vietnam is the first country chosen by NASA to organize NASA Week - an annual activity of the US space agency - starting in the 2000s. The event was organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Computer Association in coordination with the People's Committee of Hau Giang province, the People's Committee of Thu Duc city (Ho Chi Minh City) and the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province.

The program aims to highlight NASA's achievements and contributions to space exploration, scientific research and technology development. During the event series, NASA also introduces some of its latest projects and initiatives. The event is expected to inspire the younger generation with stories of astronauts in their working and living environments in space and the universe; share scientific research to protect the earth, reduce environmental pollution, warn of the risks of asteroids colliding with the earth, as well as learn about extraterrestrial life.
During the week, students will have the opportunity to talk with two aerospace luminaries: Mr. Michael A. Baker, former NASA astronaut and former US Navy Captain, and Dr. Josef Schmid, NASA flight surgeon.
Michael A. Baker was the chief of the astronaut support staff at Kennedy Space Center for the Space Shuttles. To date, Michael A. Baker has logged 965 hours in space, piloted two space shuttles, and commanded two shuttles before the year 2000. After retiring from space travel, he has been assigned to other NASA activities.

Dr. Josefs Schmid is a former NASA surgeon and physician at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He has served as a senior inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration. Dr. Josefs Schmid is responsible for treating astronauts and their family members, engineers, and retired astronauts, including those from the Gemini and Apollo programs.
In addition, the program also has activities such as: movie screenings; interactive games; zero gravity games; STEM workshops by age; STEM competitions, autograph signing and taking photos with astronauts; exploring the night sky - Starry Night; In addition, attendees can also learn about the virtual universe - Metaverse; Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality - VR/AR; watch Drone performances, Light Show - Hologram Tube of Astronaut.
These activities aim to orient the young generation to pursue STEM subjects including science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The series of activities will start in Hau Giang on June 5 and 6 at the Hau Giang Provincial Convention Center (Vi Thanh City); Ho Chi Minh City on June 7 at the Ho Chi Minh City Student Cultural House (Thu Duc City); Binh Dinh on June 8 and 9 at the Binh Dinh Provincial Convention Center and the Center for Science Discovery & Innovation.
Space Week has been held in Scotland since the early 2000s. The program was proposed by Hyang Lloyd, a former NASA employee. Over the past 20 years, the program has been held in many countries, connecting NASA with young people, inspiring scientific research, and promoting international cooperation.
Mr. Lam Nguyen Hai Long, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Computer Association, hopes to maintain this event annually and hopes that NASA will continue to choose Vietnam as a destination, and in the future, raise the event to a regional level.
