Sustainable Livelihoods from Native Plants
Mr. Pham Thanh Hoang shared that during his charity trips to the mountainous districts of Quang Nam province, he was often “treated” by the Co Tu people to a mildly aromatic drink with the flavor of the mountains and forests called Tr'din. This drink is considered the quintessence of the mountains and forests, extracted from the precious resin drops of the Tr'din tree, which can only be found in the Tay Giang region (Quang Nam). This is also a precious medicinal herb.
Realizing that Tr'din is both nutritious and beneficial to community life, he joined hands with local people to cultivate Tr'din trees and expand the raw material area with the initial purpose of producing canned water. Mr. Hoang's relationship with the Co Tu people began here.
After many years of research, Mr. Hoang and his colleagues have researched natural sugar from the Tr'din tree (also known as Tr'din syrup), a healthy sugar containing polyphenol active ingredients to treat diabetes. When used, Tr'din syrup does not increase blood sugar levels (has a low GI index), has antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that enhance resistance similar to natural honey.
“Nurturing and planting Tr'din trees in Tay Giang (Quang Nam province) not only develops raw material areas for production, creating sustainable livelihoods for people, but also contributes to increasing forest cover, regenerating and preserving water resources, thereby reducing the impact of climate change, reducing greenhouse emissions, regenerating ecosystems, habitats for animals and plants and neutralizing carbon, towards achieving the Net Zero target at COP26.” – Mr. Hoang shared.
In addition to developing products from the Tr'din tree, Mr. Hoang also established 4 clean agricultural and medicinal cooperatives to connect the harvesting and consumption of organic agricultural products for the Co Tu people. Agricultural products such as ginger, turmeric, chili, bamboo shoots, banana seeds, snow oranges, and Ngoc Cau mushrooms are all grown and produced according to organic standards and are well received by consumers. From there, creating sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of households in the mountainous areas of Quang Nam.
Mr. A Lang Nia, a resident of AXan commune, Tay Giang district, said that in the past, villagers did not consider developing the economy from the forest. Since joining the Tay Giang Forest Agricultural Products Cooperative, villagers have learned how to take advantage of their mountain and forest specialties to enrich themselves.
Towards selling carbon credits
Not only stopping at creating sustainable livelihoods for ethnic minorities in Tay Giang, Nam Giang, Hoa Vang from organic agricultural products, Mr. Pham Thanh Hoang also has the ambition to sell another special product, which is carbon emission credits from the very raw material areas that are formed. Recently, Tay Giang Forest Garden Food Joint Stock Company and GEEZ NET-ZERO Joint Stock Company signed a strategic cooperation agreement on promoting and developing activities related to carbon credit trading, transfer of emission rights, including carbon credits.
Mr. Hoang said that each country, organization, and individual will have a certain amount of carbon emission quota. If the licensed quota is not used up, it can be sold back to the country or organization with emissions exceeding the permitted quota. For our country's agricultural sector, if people produce low greenhouse gas emissions and do not use up the quota, they can sell it to other countries and organizations to earn money. Therefore, the project has registered to prepare a greenhouse gas inventory report according to ISO 14064-1:2018 and Decree No. 06/2022/ND-CP and ISO 14067 on carbon tracing.
The entire process is aimed at green, clean production, no waste discharge into water sources, decarbonization in the supply chain to protect the environment and not cause harm to humans, very suitable for participating in the carbon credit market for people to have more profit.
“Our desire when participating in the carbon credit market is to contribute to promoting green solutions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing global climate change and protecting the ecosystem and environment.” – Mr. Hoang shared.
