According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Thi Bich Dao, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, in the changing seasons, the mucous membranes in the throat area are easily inflamed, causing pain, coughing and hoarseness. To prevent or alleviate symptoms, people can refer to some of the following methods.

Limit contact with sick people

Communication will cause saliva droplets or nasal secretions to fly into the air. When meeting someone with symptoms of sore throat, you need to keep your distance, wear a mask, disinfect your hands after contact, coughing, sneezing, before and after eating to prevent disease.

Keep your body and throat warm

The transition from hot to cold seasons makes the throat mucosa weak, susceptible to viruses and bacteria. To prevent this, you should bathe in warm water in a closed room, avoid drafts, and dry your body immediately after bathing. At night, you should close the door to avoid cold wind from entering the room. Avoid letting the air conditioner or fan blow directly on you. When the temperature drops, you should keep your hands, feet, chest, neck, and head warm.

Keep the living environment clean

A dusty and unsanitary living environment is a good condition for bacteria and viruses to grow. To prevent disease, you need to keep your home well-ventilated. Regularly clean items such as keyboards, phones, remote controls, etc. When traveling, you should disinfect items such as TV and air conditioner remote controls.

Oral and throat hygiene

The human oral cavity contains about 700 types of bacteria. These are the agents that cause respiratory diseases, sore throat and tonsillitis. In addition, after a day of eating and drinking, the mouth and throat accumulate a lot of plaque. If the oral cavity is not cleaned properly, the plaque will create a favorable environment for bacteria to grow, attack the teeth and throat, causing inflammation.

Therefore, you should brush your teeth twice a day, for at least two minutes each time. Replace your toothbrush every three months. Clean your mouth and throat with saline in the morning and at night before going to bed.

Avoid eating hard foods, sweets, cold, spicy foods

For people who often suffer from sore throats, they need to be more careful in their daily activities to avoid the disease recurring many times. They should limit hard foods, sweets, cold foods or spicy foods that damage the throat lining, creating conditions for bacteria to attack.

Limit drinking ice water, turning on cold air conditioning, using a fan directly on your head, and bathing immediately after being in the sun to prevent sore throat. Limit stimulants, tobacco, alcohol, and beer that weaken the immune system.

According to Dr. Dao, you should spend 30 minutes a day exercising, increasing resistance and improving health. When you have symptoms of rhinitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, you need to go to a medical facility and get treatment early. "Absolutely do not use medicine at home on your own, especially antibiotics," said Dr. Dao.
