Major General, Hero of the Armed Forces Dang Tran Duc (alias Ba Quoc), former member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, Director of Department 12, General Department II, Ministry of National Defense, is known as one of the "trump cards" of the Vietnamese intelligence force. He operated right in the enemy's intelligence agency's lair to exploit information and serve the resistance.

His life and career were later vividly portrayed in many books and newspapers. These include the novel The Intelligence General and His Two Wives by writer Nguyen Tran Thiet, Intelligence is not my profession by writer Khuat Quang Thuy, Editor-in-Chief of Van Nghe newspaper or the series of more than thirty articles The mysterious intelligence general and his super missions by Hoang Hai Van - Tan Tu in Thanh Nien newspaper...

As one of Mr. Ba Quoc's excellent students, for many years, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, former member of the Party Central Committee, former member of the Central Military Commission, former Deputy Minister of National Defense, has always held in his heart the concern of telling about the life and career of his outstanding teacher.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh talks about his intelligence teacher.

After much thought, Senior Lieutenant General Vinh decided to write The Teacher . The book is a collection of writings and lessons about the profession, about people, about life of Mr. Ba Quoc - a talented intelligence general - to help generations, especially the young generation in the intelligence industry, to learn and absorb in the process of growing up.

During the exchange at Book and Reading Culture Day 2023, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh had the opportunity to share many things about the book and unforgettable memories of the 20 years he lived with the intelligence general Ba Quoc.

Many times he was moved and silent when talking about business trips, meetings with his teacher or the times Mr. Ba Quoc "broke the rules" to save his teammates...

According to General Vinh, Mr. Ba Quoc was a person who loved books very much. He always told his students that no school taught better than books, no life lesson was better than books. When he was 80 years old, Mr. Ba Quoc still read books every day. Therefore, he advised General Vinh to try to read books, especially when he was young.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh and writers recall memories of Intelligence General Ba Quoc.

To General Vinh, Mr. Ba Quoc is one of the most important teachers in his life. General Vinh today would not be possible without the training hands of Mr. Ba Quoc.

During the years under Mr. Ba Quoc's guidance, in addition to his knowledge of intelligence strategies, General Nguyen Chi Vinh also learned many things about love and the ideals of a great personality.

Mr. Ba Quoc's definition of love is love for the Fatherland, love for family, love for comrades. Mr. Ba Quoc always affirmed that intelligence is not his job. He is a patriot and a revolutionary. Revolution is his job.

"He taught us that intelligence is about people. The nature of intelligence is to conclude a problem when there is not enough information. In an urgent situation, when necessary, an intelligence officer must have the courage to give a right or wrong answer, yes or no," Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh said.

Mr. Ba Quoc always admitted that "intelligence is not my profession", but through what Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh told, we can see that what Mr. Ba Quoc taught his students were always the most essential intelligence lessons.

At the sharing session, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh also talked about Mr. Ba Quoc's two wives: Mrs. Pham Thi Thanh - the wife in the North and Mrs. Ngo Thi Xuan - the wife in the South.

Before letting Mr. Ba Quoc go to the South to marry another woman to serve in intelligence work, Mrs. Thanh set a condition that when the country was liberated, she would bring him back. During the years that Mr. Ba Quoc was on duty, Mrs. Thanh and her children had a miserable life, suffering many hardships and disadvantages.

Despite many rumors that he went to the South to join the enemy, she still believed that her husband was a revolutionary and would never betray the country. She also never complained about the difficult life without a breadwinner in the family.

Many readers are very interested in the book "The Teacher".

In the South, Mrs. Xuan devoted herself to protecting Ba Quoc so that he could complete his mission. Once, when Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh asked: "In the 24 years you have been working here, did you know that you were a communist intelligence agent?", Mrs. Xuan immediately replied: "How could I not know about my husband? Every night he would go down to the basement to take pictures of documents. He also saved his own money. At first, I thought he was saving the money to support another girl, but in fact he was saving it to support his base."

Living with a "sword hanging over her head every day" for 24 years, Ms. Xuan was always mentally prepared, keeping a jar of rice and some spare money in case one day she was captured by the enemy, so her little child would still have something to eat.

Because he admired these two noble women so much, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh planned to tell their lives through the pages of a book. However, due to lack of materials, he decided to change direction and write about Mr. Ba Quoc in the book "The Teacher".

The work is like a reminder for those who are still alive, about a special intelligence officer of Vietnam.
