Experience in preparing for the flight

Preparing for a flight is probably the most time-consuming part of your journey. That’s why many passengers are confused about what to do to prepare best.

Buy plane tickets

You can buy airline tickets directly from airlines or through reputable offices, agents or buy tickets online. Tickets will be much cheaper if you buy about 2 - 3 months before departure.

What do you need to prepare for your first flight?

For international flights: Passengers must have a passport, visa and other documents required by the authorities of the countries of departure, transit and destination.

For domestic flights: Passengers can use the following documents: Passport or travel document; Identity card; Citizen identification card; Identification card, certification of the armed forces; National Assembly Delegate card, Party membership card, Journalist card; Car and motorbike driving license; Identity confirmation paper confirmed by the police at the place of permanent or temporary residence; Birth certificate (for passengers under 14 years old), birth certificate (for passengers under 1 month old)...

All of the above documents must be valid. Many countries require a passport to be valid for at least 6 months before entry, and some countries require both an entry visa and a transit visa.

Baggage regulations

Carry-on baggage: This is the baggage you bring with you when boarding the plane, you will put them above the seat, under the seat or keep them with you. Normally, the regulations for carry-on baggage are not to exceed 7kg and the total size of 3 dimensions (length, width, height) must not exceed 115cm (56cm x 36cm x 23cm).

Checked baggage: According to regulations, checked baggage must not exceed 32kg and the total dimensions (length, width, height) must not exceed 119cm x 119cm x 81cm. Each individual's checked baggage must be checked in by that individual.

For Vietnam Airlines, passengers will enjoy the following free baggage allowance:

Business and Premium Economy Class: 32kg checked baggage + 2 pieces of hand luggage (18kg)

Economy class: 23kg checked baggage + 1 piece of hand luggage (12kg)

For passengers flying Vietjet Air or Pacific Airlines, only free carry-on baggage weighing no more than 7kg is allowed.

Experience in airport procedures

Checking in is probably the most confusing part of flying for first-time passengers. Follow these steps to make the process as quick as possible.

How early should I get to the airport?

To quickly check in and be proactive in some problematic situations, please arrive at least 45 minutes early for domestic flights and 2 hours early for international flights.

Check-in procedure

Currently, airlines are implementing 3 forms of check-in procedures:

Check in online on the airline’s website. This will help you choose your preferred seat, without having to wait or queue at the airport, saving you time. If you are traveling with family, online check-in will also help you proactively choose seats close to each other.

Check-in at the airport: If you choose this method, you should arrive at the airport about 2 hours before international flights and 45 minutes before domestic flights. You need to present your ticket code or paper ticket along with the above documents to check-in.

Check in at the airport kiosks and the kiosks will automatically print out boarding passes that are exactly the same as those issued at the counter. First-time flyers need not worry about using this form because these kiosks are very easy to use.

Aviation security screening procedures

After checking in, passengers must go to the security control area and comply with all instructions and requests of aviation security control staff, and comply with aviation security screening procedures for people and luggage.

Airport security staff will ask you to remove your coat, hat, shoes, belt, personal belongings and other items you carry; place objects, liquids, electronic devices on a tray and pass it through the X-ray machine before passing through the security gate.

Present documents

Passengers must present valid identification documents and their boarding pass (paper or on an electronic device such as a phone, computer, etc.) for inspection by aviation security personnel.

Experience on the plane

Once you are seated, the next thing to do is to fasten your seat belt. Do not unfasten your seat belt, even when eating or sleeping in your seat. Don't be afraid to ask the flight attendant how to fasten your seat belt if you are not sure.

One of the things to know when flying for the first time is that you should not bring food on the plane. You can bring dry foods such as bread and make sure that there is no strong smell that affects the general space on the plane. On flights longer than 1 hour and 30 minutes of Vietnam Airlines, passengers will be served light meals. However, some low-cost airlines such as Pacific Airlines or Vietjet Air will not have this service but you can buy it if needed.

You must strictly follow the safety rules on the plane and read the instructions, which are usually in the small pocket in front of your seat. This paper explains where each emergency item such as life jacket, breathing apparatus is located in case of decompression, how to escape in case of fire, how the aisle lights will light up, etc.

Experience when getting off the airport

One thing you need to know when flying for the first time is to absolutely not use your phone or any other broadcasting devices in general, especially when the plane is taking off or landing because they can affect the communication between the control tower and the crew. Do not rush to leave your seat without notice from the airline staff.

Then you need to pay attention to the signs around the exit to know which conveyor belt you need to pick up your luggage from. If it is checked baggage, you need to take an additional step of comparing the sticker on the luggage with the sticker on the ticket to see if it matches.
