On the evening of April 16 local time, the countdown clock to the 2024 Paris Olympics began to display the number 100, marking 100 days until the 33rd Summer Olympics will officially open in the capital of France.
Located near the foot of the Eiffel Tower, this special clock is set to be inaugurated in 2023, 500 days before the opening of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The clock has a stainless steel case, with digital time markers that will be illuminated at night.
The watch design is inspired by the Paris Olympic logo combined with Art-Deco style motifs that were popular in the French capital 100 years ago.
Earlier on the same day, the Paris 2024 Olympic torch lighting ceremony took place in front of the 2,600-year-old temple of Hera in the small town of Peloponnese (Southwestern Greece) - where the Olympics were born in 776 BC.
The ceremony was attended by Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach, French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
A torch relay will carry the flame along a 5,000km route through Greece until it is handed over to the Paris Olympics organising committee in Athens on April 26. The French capital will officially open the Games on July 26 with a celebration on the Seine River.
All permanent infrastructure for the 2024 Olympics is now ready and construction of temporary venues has begun in Paris, especially in the Place de la Concorde. Posters promoting the Paris 2024 Olympics have also been present in metro stations since April 16.
Meanwhile, some iconic architectural works in the French capital have also created their own marks to respond to this important event, for example, the stairs leading to the Sacre Coeur Basilica have been painted in the symbolic colors of the Olympics.
Organizers hope that the preparations, along with the torch relay across France, will stir up the atmosphere in the country ahead of the world's most important sporting event, which will take place from July 26 to August 11. A survey conducted last month found that 57% of respondents said they were not very enthusiastic about the 2024 Paris Olympics.
