According to the Russian news agency TASS , President Putin regularly convenes meetings of the permanent members of the Russian Security Council, usually on Fridays. However, this meeting was held on Monday, coinciding with the inauguration of Mr. Trump in the US.
Mr Trump becoming the 47th President of the United States was on the agenda at the meeting. Mr Putin congratulated Mr Trump on his inauguration.
The Russian leader said: "During the election period, Mr. Trump had difficulties on all fronts. He and even his family were under constant pressure... But he was courageous and won the election convincingly."
President Putin welcomed the new US administration's stance on restoring direct contact with Russia and preventing the risk of World War III.
The conflict in Ukraine was also an issue discussed by Russian leaders and officials. According to President Putin, the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine should lead to a lasting peace, not a short-lived ceasefire.
Moscow will fight for its own interests and the interests of the Russian people, he added, because "that is the goal and the essence of the special military operation".
Referring to the Middle East issue, Russia is skeptical that the Middle East has achieved a stable peace after the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, when both sides issued warnings of violating the agreement.
In the past, on January 20, 2021 - the day Joe Biden was inaugurated as US President, Mr. Putin chaired a meeting on integration within the Eurasian Economic Union and had a phone call with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko. President Putin also held meetings on this day in 2013 and 2017.
Going back to January 20, 2005 - the day President George W. Bush took office for his second term, Mr. Putin's work schedule was very tight, but there were no programs, including international events, related to the US.
On this day in 2001, Mr. Putin chaired a working meeting on domestic and foreign affairs. The agenda of the meeting was not disclosed.
