David Hoffmann regularly posts videos about his travel experiences in every country he has the opportunity to visit.

A few months ago, David came to Vietnam and chose Hanoi as his first stop to experience street food.

In addition to popular dishes such as beef noodle soup, banh mi, bun cha, banh cuon, etc., he also had the opportunity to discover some strange dishes that not all foreign visitors dare to try in Hanoi, such as pig intestines, snake meat, duck eggs, and chicken stewed in beer cans. David said that chicken stewed in beer cans is a "shocking" dish, but the delicious flavor is far beyond imagination.

To enjoy this dish, he was taken by a Vietnamese tour guide to a famous restaurant on Hang Cot Street (Hoan Kiem District). This has also been a familiar dining address for many locals and tourists for many years.

At the restaurant, David tried the stewed black chicken dish. The whole black chicken, from meat to bones, was neatly arranged in a beer can, stewed until tender with some ingredients and spices of traditional Chinese medicine such as mugwort, wolfberry, red apple, lotus seeds, etc.

The Western customer admitted that he was initially quite shocked when he saw the stewed black chicken in a beer can because the meat and broth were both black, and the tiny feet were clearly visible.

He was also curious to know why this strange-looking dish is so popular with Hanoians. “I was a bit shocked when I saw this dish but I was also mentally prepared to try it,” David said.

In response to his reaction, the Vietnamese tour guide introduced stewed chicken as a nutritious dish for the body because it is cooked with some typical Chinese medicinal spices. Hanoians enjoy stewed chicken as a delicious snack in the hope that it can bring health benefits.

“The first moment you see this dish may shock you. However, after the seller takes the stewed chicken out of the beer can, you will smell the aroma and be eager to taste it right away,” said the American YouTuber.

When he tasted the first piece of stewed chicken, David was surprised by the taste of the dish that was far from what he had imagined. He commented that the meat was tender, easily separated from the bone, and had an attractive aroma. Even when dipped in salt, pepper, and chili, he found the stewed chicken to be more flavorful and delicious. “The taste is amazing. I love this dish,” David said.

In addition to the tender meat, the Western guest also praised the broth and mugwort. He found the broth to have a strange color but a harmonious flavor, mixed with the natural sweetness of the chicken and the slight bitterness of the mugwort. This vegetable is also easy to eat.

“Actually, when I saw stewed chicken in a beer can, I thought this dish was strange, but after trying it, I found the flavor much more unique,” the Western guest expressed.

At the end of the meal, Davids admitted that the beer-canned chicken was one of the strangest dishes he had ever tasted, but the delicious flavor was hard to match, as attractive as any famous dish in Hanoi. "I will definitely enjoy this dish again," he affirmed.
