Freight rates are one of the reasons for the rise in global coffee prices. According to data from the Brazilian government, the country's coffee exports in December 2024 reached 200,000 tons, down 17.1% compared to the same period in 2023. Severe port congestion in Brazil has caused logistical difficulties at export ports, also causing coffee prices to rise.

World coffee prices fell for the second consecutive session for robusta coffee, closing the weekend session down quite sharply to 72 USD, due to pressure from sales from Vietnam after the Lunar New Year At Ty. Arabica prices adjusted but remained at a record high, closing almost unchanged compared to the previous day's end.

According to World & Vietnam , at the end of this week's trading session (February 7), the price of robusta coffee on the ICE Futures Europe London for delivery in March 2025 decreased by 72 USD, trading at 5,561 USD/ton. The delivery in May 2025 decreased by 72 USD, trading at 5,564 USD/ton. The average trading volume was low.

Arabica coffee prices on the ICE Futures US New York exchange, delivery term March 2025 increased by 0.4 cents, trading at 404.35 cents/lb. Meanwhile, delivery term May 2025 decreased by 0.4 cents, trading at 396.70 cents/lb. Trading volume is high.

The decline of the London floor was predicted before the Vietnamese market reopened after the long Tet holiday. Besides, Robusta coffee has been in the overbought zone since last week, now is the time for strong speculative selling, pushing prices down deeply. Robusta coffee prices sometimes reached their peak, but strong selling pressure at the top pushed the market down.

Meanwhile, many reasons caused Arabica coffee prices to end their 12-session rally and not set another record, with the decline in London dragging down New York coffee. Arabica coffee futures for March 2025 rose 7% this week, after rising 8.7% last week. However, the gains were limited in the final trading session of the week due to a stronger US dollar, putting pressure on profit-taking on coffee futures.

Traders said the market was being hit by concerns about shrinking supplies from top producers Brazil and Vietnam, along with the threat that the Trump administration could impose trade tariffs on major coffee producers in South America. The threat of tariffs forcing coffee to reroute comes amid an already-difficult logistics industry.
