On the first evening in Hanoi, Japanese tourists and their families went to Hang Thiec Street to enjoy fried duck with garlic. They commented that the dish was delicious and regretted that it was not available in Japan.
Many foreign tourists coming to Hanoi are not only impressed by the dishes imbued with traditional Vietnamese culture, but are also attracted by dishes that are considered "strange, strange, and not everyone dares to try".
VietNamNet introduces a series of articles "Foreign visitors try Vietnamese food in Hanoi" about the experiences of international visitors when enjoying Vietnamese food in this city.
KiKi (real name Kazuki Matsumoto, 38 years old) is a Japanese YouTuber, currently living and working in Vietnam for 6 years.
On his personal YouTube channel with more than 150,000 followers, KiKi regularly shares videos about cultural and culinary experiences in the provinces and cities of Vietnam that he has had the opportunity to visit.
Most recently, KiKi welcomed her extended family to Hanoi, including her biological parents, her younger brother Kenji and his wife, her youngest brother Mitsuki and his wife, and two grandchildren.
“Including me, there are nine people in my family today. My parents and my youngest brother and his wife, who live in Osaka, will arrive first. My second brother and his wife flew from Hiroshima so they will arrive about three hours later,” KiKi said.
For convenience in traveling and exploring Hanoi's Old Quarter, KiKi booked a fully furnished apartment for the whole family near Long Bien Bridge.
Standing from the 2nd floor balcony, members can expand their view far away, admiring the ancient and poetic Long Bien bridge in front.
While everyone was resting and touring the rooms, the Japanese YouTuber took the opportunity to take his youngest brother for a walk and bought some hot rice rolls to bring home for the whole family to eat and regain their strength.
KiKi's father and Kenji - the younger brother - were surprised and delighted when they enjoyed Vietnamese rice rolls for the first time.
The two Japanese guests kept picking up the food, praising it as delicious, making KiKi laugh and advise them not to eat too much, to save room for dinner.
The dining place that KiKi's family (except his mother who stayed in the apartment to rest because she was tired) visited in the evening was a restaurant on Hang Thiec Street (Hoan Kiem District).
The restaurant is quite famous for its duck dishes, of which the most popular is the fried duck with garlic. This is also a popular dish in Hanoi's Old Quarter, attracting both locals and foreign tourists.
Because the restaurant was crowded on Sunday, Kiki's family had to wait in line for a while to get a seat and start ordering.
The Japanese YouTuber ordered 2 plates of boiled duck, 2 plates of boneless duck feet salad, 1 bowl of bamboo shoot soup and 1 plate of fried duck with garlic, served with vermicelli and herbs.
After a few minutes of waiting, the staff brought out cold, ready-made dishes such as boiled duck and duck leg salad for the diners to enjoy. The garlic-fried duck dish needed to be eaten hot, and was served after the customer ordered it.
KiKi enthusiastically invited the whole family to have dinner. He also did not forget to instruct the members on how to enjoy duck meat, a specialty of the capital. That is, eat it with herbs and dip it in fish sauce, garlic and chili.
Vermicelli is served with hot bamboo shoot soup to warm the stomach and keep you full for a long time.
After enjoying the first piece of boiled duck meat, Kenji immediately exclaimed “delicious, delicious” which made everyone excited and delighted. The Japanese male tourist was also surprised because duck meat eaten with coriander or dog mint is also very delicious.
When he tasted the boneless duck leg salad, he commented that this dish tasted similar to the papaya salad in Thailand.
Kenji was so impressed with the taste of the goose meat here that he felt regretful that these dishes were not available in Japan.
“I wish Japan had it too,” he confided.
Not only Kenji, Kiki's father also expressed his delight with the boiled duck dish. Mitsuki focused on enjoying the dish, so much so that Kiki jokingly teased: "Why are you eating so quietly?"
Mitsuki commented that boiled duck and garlic fried duck were equally delicious, but each dish had its own very attractive flavor.
Meanwhile, KiKi's father commented that boiled goose is easier to eat because the meat is soft, has a natural sweet taste, and is suitable for the elderly.
After finishing dinner on the first day in Hanoi, KiKi and the members returned to the apartment to rest.
On the way back, he also bought bread and mixed sweet soup for his mother and introduced to the whole family some popular delicacies in the capital.
