Frog farming cooperative in Ho Chi Minh City uses social networks to sell products, earning billions

Frog farming cooperatives in Ho Chi Minh City use social networks such as Facebook, TikTok, Zalo, and Youtube to sell products, directly earning billions of dollars each year.

Changing lives by raising frogs on tarpaulin-lined ponds

Realizing that frog farming is suitable for local natural conditions, Mr. Duong Dinh Tinh in Nhuan Duc commune (Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City) has implemented a commercial frog farming model. Initially, with a modest capital, in 2017, he took advantage of the land around his house to dig 2 ponds and line them with tarpaulin to raise nearly 5,000 commercial frogs.

However, after 9 months of hard work, when it was time to harvest, the price of frog meat dropped, so he decided to select healthy frogs for breeding, and sell the rest to balance income and expenses. Thanks to his skillful hands, with only 200 pairs of parent frogs, after 4 months, nearly 80,000 baby frogs were produced, with the breeding price of about 500 VND/frog, bringing in an income of over 30 million VND after deducting expenses.

Mr. Duong Dinh Tinh - Director of Phat Dat Frog Breeding Cooperative in Nhuan Duc Commune (Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City)

Realizing that raising frogs in earthen ponds is difficult to control diseases, has a low survival rate, and high losses, through research, he discovered that frogs living in floating cement tanks have many outstanding advantages. He applies two forms of raising: raising on the ground and on a platform. Raising on the ground is letting the frogs sit on the bottom of the tank, the water level is about 5-6mm. Raising on a wooden platform, the water level is about 20-30mm, changing the water every 2 days.

From there, he upgraded the entire breeding area to 7 ponds, gradually increasing to 80 ponds. Of these, 15 ponds are used to raise 5,000 pairs of parent frogs, 5 ponds are for breeding and 60 ponds are for raising baby frogs. Currently, each month, Mr. Tinh sells nearly 1.5 tons of baby frogs (equivalent to about 2.2 million frogs) to the market at a price of 600 to 900 VND/frog, earning hundreds of millions of VND/month.

Commercial frogs of Phat Dat Aquaculture Commercial Production Cooperative

Mr. Duong Dinh Tinh shared: "The commercial frog farming model does not require much initial investment, requires little care, and can release about 100 frogs per square meter of water surface."

The secret to Mr. Tinh's success is to apply the method of raising frogs with herbs. Herbs including garlic, eclipta prostrata, and chili peppers, when ground, are very good natural antibiotics to prevent and treat diseases in frogs. After raising them for 2.5 months, he crushed garlic and mixed it into the frog's food. When he discovered that the frogs had diarrhea, he crushed eclipta prostrata and mixed it into the food to treat intestinal diseases...

Seeing the effectiveness of Mr. Tinh's model, many people inside and outside the locality have come to visit, learn and boldly invest in raising. However, most people have not mastered the technique, many households are confused when an epidemic occurs and do not know how to handle it, leading to ineffective raising.

Cooperatives guarantee output for members

In order to help people stabilize production, in 2019, Mr. Tinh took the initiative to establish the Phat Dat Aquaculture Commercial Production Cooperative with 7 members and a production scale of nearly 5 hectares. In his new position, in addition to transferring science and technology, he also spends a lot of time researching and finding new breeding methods and frog breeds that bring high efficiency to share and support people inside and outside the cooperative to get rich together. The cooperative specializes in providing frog breeds, commercial frogs, technical advice on housing and care, and product output for farmers. Thanks to the application of science and technology, the cooperative's frogs all develop on time and rarely get sick.

Not only developing locally, Phat Dat Cooperative also cooperates with many farmers in different regions. Sharing about the development orientation in the coming time, Mr. Tinh said: When the number of products produced increases, to solve the problem of consumption and increase production value, in parallel with producing frog breeds, the Cooperative directs people to switch to commercial frogs and at the same time, gradually build a closed-chain breeding and processing process.

"However, there is still a long way to go to achieve that. The cooperative hopes that the government will continue to pay attention and support policies and mechanisms so that the cooperative can develop further," Mr. Tinh confided.

Using social networks to sell frogs, making billions in profit

Although Tet holiday has just passed, Mr. Duong Dinh Tinh and the members of the cooperative are still busy preparing goods to ship to customers. Every week, the cooperative has 10-15 orders to deliver to customers through ordering channels from Youtube, Facebook, Zalo and Tiktok.

According to the director of the cooperative, born in 1985, in the past, he and the members of the cooperative consumed products and relied on traders or customers or acquaintances to deliver commercial frogs and frog breeds. But the market was unstable, mainly depending on traders coming to the house to buy and transport to the markets, so consumption was slow. Therefore, the cooperative did not dare to expand its scale.

Thanks to marketing and promotion on social networks, the cooperative has many orders everywhere.

In 2020, Mr. Tinh joined the social network Facebook, posted product images and received orders, thereby opening a new direction for the family. Accordingly, he created the Phat Dat Frog Fanpage on Facebook, Zalo, Tiktok Duong Dinh Tinh and the Phat Dat Frog Farm website. This created a positive effect in introducing and consuming frog breeds and finished frog products of the Cooperative.

To increase efficiency, cooperative members have established their own social media channels to sell products together and increase reach, creating a widespread sales ecosystem for the cooperative. In the near future, the cooperative will increase sales through live streaming on applications to attract more customers.

Currently, the cooperative annually supplies the market with hundreds of tons of commercial frogs and hundreds of millions of frog breeds; of which, more than 60% is consumed through online sales on social networking platforms.

Mr. Tinh said that the market for frog breeds and commercial frogs is quite stable. The quantity is enough to supply 1-2 tons/day. The retail price of live frogs is 50,000 VND/kg, while fresh cleaned frogs cost up to 100,000 VND/kg, depending on the type. By selling frog breeds and commercial frogs of the cooperative on social networks and through the trader channel, the cooperative members earn billions of VND each year.

Phat Dat Aquaculture Production and Trade Cooperative sells products through social media channels

Mr. Tinh shared that he is not familiar with technology, but he and his members boldly approach and learn more from information on the internet to apply to marketing, promotion and sales. The good thing about selling through social networking platforms is that the cooperative can sell products all year round, providing a stable income.

According to the assessment of the Farmers' Association of Cu Chi District, Phat Dat Frog Breeding Cooperative is being invested in quite systematically, helping members of the Cooperative increase their income from frog breeding farms and commercial frogs. The closed-cycle frog production of Phat Dat Frog Breeding Cooperative is being implemented in line with the urban agricultural production orientation of Ho Chi Minh City. The application of breeding technology with effective technical improvements has brought farmers better economic values, creating favorable and sustainable output.
