Scientific workshop on construction and restoration of Tran Hung Dao Temple in Dien Bien Phu City

On February 16, in Hanoi, Dien Bien province coordinated with the Vietnam Cultural Heritage Association to organize a scientific workshop with the theme "Construction and restoration of the Temple of Saint Tran in Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province".

Attending the event were comrades: Associate Professor, Doctor Tran Quoc Cuong, Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; Mua A Son, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; Le Thanh Do, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Lo Van Phuong, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Council...

In addition, the workshop was attended by delegates, guests, and scientists: Professor, Doctor of Science, People's Teacher Vu Minh Giang, Vice President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association; Associate Professor, Doctor Do Van Tru, President of the Vietnam Cultural Heritage Association...

In the initial discussions at the first scientific workshop organized by the Provincial People's Committee in Dien Bien Phu City, the viewpoint of building a new Tran Hung Dao Temple gradually replaced the original viewpoint of restoration. The second workshop was held to continue to discuss in depth a number of issues: Verifying and confirming the authenticity of the photos of Tran Hung Dao Temple on A1 Hill, the possibility of searching for more related documents; thoroughly discussing the necessity of building Tran Hung Dao Temple; considering Tran Hung Dao Temple in the space of the Dien Bien Phu Battlefield National Special Historical Relic Planning, choosing the construction location; outlining the connection of the Temple of martyrs who died in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign with Tran Hung Dao Temple and neighboring relic sites.

Regarding the results of searching, collecting information, documents, and materials related to the Temple of Saint Tran, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has collected 6 photos, 4 documents, and some documents with information related to the Temple of Saint Tran at the A1 Hill relic. In addition, 50 volumes of documents (including: 13 volumes of Han Nom, 37 volumes of French) related to Dien Bien Phu from 1942 and before are being translated into Vietnamese and are currently stored at the National Archives Center 1 in Hanoi.

At the workshop, delegates focused on discussing the beliefs of gods and the beliefs of Saint Tran; solutions and orientations for preserving, renovating and restoring the Dien Bien Phu Battlefield relic in the coming time; especially proposing architectural plans and worship arrangements in the Temple of Saint Tran in Dien Bien...

Along with that, the delegates proposed and agreed with the plan to build a Temple of Saint Tran at the Doi Chay relic. This is a hill lower than Doi A1, about 200m from the center of Doi A1 as the crow flies, and may be located in the area of ​​Doi Lang Chuong (former name of Doi A1). The land for building the Temple is expected to be open, spacious, with beautiful natural scenery, ensuring the elements of combining construction items on the overall site in a harmonious and reasonable manner, without affecting the original elements of the relic. The construction of Tran Temple at Doi Chay relic will create a continuous axis including: Temple of martyrs at Dien Bien Phu battlefield, National Martyrs Cemetery A1, creating a place for religious and spiritual activities, commemorating heroic martyrs and predecessors who have contributed to building and defending the Fatherland, convenient for people and tourists to visit and commemorate.

Speaking at the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quoc Cuong, Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, proposed to link the research on the construction and restoration of the Tran Temple with the planning of the Dien Bien Phu Battlefield relic site; including the proposal to build the Tran Temple at Doi Chay to report to the competent management agency as a basis for implementation. At the same time, the construction of the Tran Temple religious project should be based on the highest level of socialized resources, mobilizing material contributions, raw materials, and funding from organizations and individuals.

In terms of architecture, it is necessary to restore the Temple gate architecture to the highest level according to the remaining documentary photos. However, the scale and size of the Temple gate are researched and built to suit current practical conditions. Comply with the principles of architectural style and traditional spiritual sculpture of the existing Tran Temples in the localities; at the same time, harmoniously combine the traditional sculpture of local community groups - the beneficiaries and co-subjects of the project.

Regarding the landscape, Provincial Party Secretary Tran Quoc Cuong proposed to preserve and develop the existing green tree system on Chay Hill to the highest level. Building a cultural space at Tran Temple in accordance with the surrounding ecological landscape, with the cultural traditions, ethnic historical traditions, aesthetic concepts, and worship customs of the Northwest - Dien Bien cultural space.
