Scholarships exclusively for Vietnamese
The New Zealand Government on January 18 announced the New Zealand Government Secondary School Scholarship (NZSS) for 2024, supporting 50% of first-year tuition fees from 18 leading secondary schools in the Kiwi country. This is a scholarship program exclusively for Vietnamese students in grades 8, 9, and 10, accepting applications from January 22 to March 17 via the website https://nzschoolscholarships.com.vn/.
Instead of requiring essays or aptitude tests like other government scholarships, NZSS requires applicants to record a 90-second video explaining why they deserve to be selected. This is to give them the opportunity to showcase their full potential. In addition, students must also meet other academic criteria, including an average score of 8 or higher and an English certificate equivalent to IELTS 5.0 (instead of 5.5 as before).
Another new feature of this year’s program is to give a second chance to candidates if they fail to get the government scholarship. Specifically, these candidates will be considered for other types of scholarships from the school. The dual admission mechanism above is to help students maximize their chances of receiving a scholarship when applying.
NZSS is an initiative of Education New Zealand (ENZ), launched in 2019. This is the first and only New Zealand government scholarship programme for secondary school students, and is also a testament to New Zealand's commitment to supporting Vietnam in developing a generation of 21st century global citizens.
NZSS 2024 offers the opportunity to access scholarships to one of 18 New Zealand high schools and is exclusively for Vietnamese students.
"NZSS is designed to enable more Vietnamese students to access and experience New Zealand's advanced education. New Zealand is a safe country and has many similarities with Vietnam. Our areas of strength include sustainable development, climate action, diversity and harmony," said Ben Burrowes, ENZ's Regional Director for Asia.
Stepping stone to new opportunities
According to ENZ, NZSS is a stepping stone to help Vietnamese students achieve new achievements. Like Tran Gia Huy, the owner of NZSS 2019, won a scholarship of 15,000 NZD to study environmental science at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand). "NZSS creates opportunities for me to develop not only academically but also in terms of independence, physical health, communication skills and integration into the international community," Huy shared.
Ms. Thuy Nguyen, parent of Hoang Thuy Truc, one of the students who achieved NZSS 2023, shared that witnessing her child's journey of growth in a new environment, with new challenges and opportunities, was a valuable experience, "more than recognition or financial support". "NZSS gives me a sense of security and is a great source of encouragement for me when following my child's every step," Ms. Thuy confided.
Ms. Tredene Dobson, New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam, highly appreciated the important role of NZSS in the bilateral education relationship. According to Ms. Dobson, every year New Zealand receives many quality applications from Vietnamese students. Young people who receive scholarships continue to achieve very impressive results in New Zealand.
"We hope that you will not only study well in New Zealand but also contribute positively to your school and community with local students, so that both of you can better understand the concept of global citizenship," Ms. Tredene Dobson shared.
