Reduce pressure on one school
Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted will stop enrolling 6th grade students from the 2024-2025 school year. This is the direction of the Hanoi People's Committee, in accordance with the requirements in Official Dispatch No. 801/BGDĐT - GDTrH dated February 28, 2024 of the Ministry of Education and Training.
The document clearly states that, according to the provisions of Circular No. 05/2023/TT-BGDDT promulgating the regulations on the organization and operation of specialized high schools, specialized classes are only organized in specialized high schools. Non-specialized classes that have been enrolled and organized in specialized high schools will continue to be implemented according to regulations until the end of grade 12, while enrollment in non-specialized classes of specialized high schools prescribed in Circular No. 06/2012/TT-BGDDT and Circular No. 12/2014/TT-BGDDT will be implemented until the end of the 2023-2024 school year.
The above information is making many students, parents and teachers regretful, especially families with children preparing to enter grade 6 this school year, planning to take the entrance exam to Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.
However, on the experts' side, many opinions support this move of Hanoi City. According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Xuan Nhi - former Deputy Minister of Education and Training, the enrollment in grade 6 of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted is stressful every year due to the high competition rate and the great pressure on students to prepare for the exam.
Therefore, according to the law and practice, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Xuan Nhi believes that stopping enrollment at the secondary level is correct and this should be done over a long period of time. In addition, the education sector needs to have a long-term, stable enrollment policy so that parents can feel secure and at ease.
Sharing the same opinion, Ms. Nguyen Thanh Nga - Hoang Van Thu Secondary School (Hoang Mai District) said that the suspension of enrollment at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted was predicted in advance. Although there were some regrets, this was the right decision because this learning environment is not for the majority. Students have many other options to study.
Many options for high quality secondary schools
In addition to the secondary school system of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, there are many other high-quality secondary schools in Hanoi such as: Cau Giay Secondary School, Thanh Xuan Secondary School, Le Loi Secondary School and Nam Tu Liem Secondary School.
These are high-quality public secondary schools that organize competency assessment tests for 6th grade admission and are also highly competitive.
To enter the above-mentioned high-quality public secondary schools, students need to meet the academic requirements of each school, and pass an exam in three subjects: Math, Vietnamese and English.
In addition, notable information in recent days is that Giang Vo Secondary School (Ba Dinh District, Hanoi) will be split into two schools, one of which is expected to follow the high-quality model.
According to the recently announced plan of Giang Vo ward and Ba Dinh district, Giang Vo Secondary School (No. 1 Tran Huy Lieu, Ba Dinh, Hanoi) will be split into: Giang Vo Secondary School and Giang Vo Secondary School 2. The two schools will still be located at the old address but will be divided in half, each school will be over 5,000m2.
The project to separate these two schools aims to reduce the number of classes and students in each class to ensure the standards and conditions for recognizing Giang Vo Secondary School as a national standard school according to regulations.
Up to now, the construction schedule of both secondary schools is ensuring the prescribed progress. In the 2024-2025 school year, because the facilities of Giang Vo 2 Secondary School have not been completed, the school's students will be arranged a temporary place to study. From the 2025-2026 school year, when Giang Vo 2 Secondary School is completed, the office will be at 1B Tran Huy Lieu Street, Giang Vo Ward.
Regarding the program, high-quality schools, in addition to ensuring the content according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, will have additional optional - key programs such as English with foreigners, bilingualism, life skills, international exchange - cooperation, extracurricular - experience to ensure the requirements for comprehensive development of students' qualities, abilities and talents.
The secondary school system of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted has been maintained for nearly 30 years. According to the assessment of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the secondary school system of the school has successfully completed its mission as the main source for specialized high school classes to achieve excellent results in national and international competitions for excellent students.
Information from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training also said that in the near future, the Department will continue to research to advise and propose to the City People's Committee a suitable plan to ensure compliance with current regulations, as well as the requirements for training high-quality human resources, while meeting the learning aspirations of students in the capital.
