On the morning of November 18, at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, female artist Ngoc Dan had a warm opening ceremony with the art exhibition Upstream, in which she invested a lot of effort and passion. Ngoc Dan was happy to meet again her "acquaintances", colleagues and the public who love her and the selected works were announced for the first time.
It is known that the exhibition Upstream is a collection of 30 oil paintings, mostly large-sized paintings created by her during the period of 2019 - 2023, belonging to 2 series: Still life series of birds, flowers, fish, leaves and Upstream series with easel paintings combined with unique frames to create wall installations. Both series are a continuation of the artistic thinking with a strong personal style that artist Ngoc Dan has built and developed consistently since 2011 to the present.
Responding to questions from journalists, artist Ngoc Dan said: "The reason the exhibition is called Upstream and many people are curious about why I chose "birds, flowers, fish, girls" as the main subjects for my works over the years is to counter the long-standing prejudices in the art world, which have always not appreciated these images."
The female artist confided: "The world has had too many changes recently, life seems to be turned upside down by epidemics and wars. All of this creates a valuable collection of materials for me to create special works during this period. For me, the characteristics of the times and social reality are the context for identifying people on the journey of life. My art focuses on exploring the inner world and spiritual strength of people on the journey to find the roots of civilization. The days of Covid - 19 are also the time for me to contemplate and find myself what is most important. I have a few works created during this painful period, which are: Tell me about the sky (2020), Waiting to set sail (2021), Waiting for the storm to pass (2021), Survival (2021)".
These are split windows with two views from two dimensions that are included in the painting as a contrast. Half of the window frame is an observational perspective from the inside, also a realistic perspective full of material with real objects in the present that people's lives need to overcome the long days of social distancing.
It is also the view from outside the window, the eyes and joy of the character when being immersed and interacting with nature, the birds are no longer afraid but come closer to people, perching on tree branches or on the window frame. The gaps in the iron window frame where the birds perch symbolize the space and free sky that people always aspire to...
Painter Ngoc Dan said: "The will is not bound by the harsh present, the spirit has broken the boundaries of circumstances, the perspective of the soul has escaped the limitations of context and social circumstances, finding true freedom to soar."
The two works Waiting for the storm to dissipate and Waiting for the sea to go out were inspired by the ancient fishing village of Nam O (Da Nang). Rows of basket boats lined up during the months when they were not allowed to go out to sea, the oars had to be put aside around them as fishermen looked out to sea, waiting for the opportunity to go out to sea after the storm.
Looking at the paintings of female artist Ngoc Dan, art critic Ngo Kim Khoi highly appreciated the way of expressing through simple strokes but conveying many messages. He briefly commented: "I noticed that in Ngoc Dan's works, although she wants to express a strong personality, breaking through with the adventure Upstream , there is always a lot of loneliness...".
Artist Ngoc Dan belongs to the 8x generation of Ho Chi Minh City. She graduated with honors with a master's degree from the Surikov Institute of Fine Arts, Russian National Academy of Sciences in 2005. The artist spent 9 years living and working in Russia before returning to Vietnam to focus on her artistic activities.
Ngoc Dan's first solo exhibition, Desolation , took place in the art capital of Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2015). Since then, the artist has been continuously active, participating in exhibitions and art exchanges, regularly connecting and organizing creative camps domestically and internationally.
