Scott Wiseman is only 39 years old this year. |
At the age of 39, Scott Wiseman is in charge of both the Gibraltar men's and women's national football teams. After ending his long playing career in England in 2023, which culminated in a spell in the Championship with Barnsley, he was appointed to manage the Gibraltar women's team.
In March this year, Wiseman was given the job of managing the Gibraltar men's team, after coach Julio Cesar Ribas resigned due to family reasons.
“It’s a privilege to coach a national team, let alone have the opportunity to take on both,” Wiseman excitedly told BBC World . “It’s like being a club manager working every day in England.”
"For me, it's the same, except I manage two national teams with different schedules. My wife had hoped to have more time with me after retiring, but luckily she's very understanding," Wiseman confided.
The Gibraltar men’s national team are looking for their first points in history, starting with their European qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup. Last week, the team took a surprise lead against Montenegro in their opening match, but eventually lost 3-1.
While it was hardly a surprise, it was still a good start for Wiseman in his role as manager of two teams. Ranked 196th in the FIFA rankings as of March, the Gibraltar men’s team showed signs of improvement, going unbeaten in seven matches before losing to Montenegro on March 23.
Gibraltar have also qualified for the Nations League and will play in the League C/D play-offs next year. While Wiseman’s long-term future as Gibraltar men’s coach is still up in the air, the young tactician remains hopeful of progress in his country’s football.
“The aim is to reach the Nations League play-offs,” said Wiseman. “We have selected a very young squad – one of the youngest I have ever worked with. Gibraltar have never won a point in qualifying for the Euros or the World Cup, so the young players need to gain the necessary international experience.”
