Became principal at age 27
Chu Tan Hoa (1968) was born into a rural family in Hunan (China). In July 1991, he graduated from university and was then assigned to Long Dien Secondary School in Ninh Huong District (China) to teach Politics.
In early 1992, in China, the wave of young people starting businesses increased sharply, Mr. Hoa wrote an application for unpaid leave to switch to business. Holding 2,500 NDT (8.6 million VND) in hand and money borrowed from many people, after half a year he lost everything because of business failure.
At this time, he returned to teaching but still did not forget his dream of starting a business. In his free time, Mr. Hoa read business stories of many famous entrepreneurs. The more he read, the more his motivation to start a business strongly urged him.
Returning to school as a failure, the teacher still worked hard. In 1995, at the age of 27, Mr. Hoa was appointed Principal of Long Dien Secondary School (China) for his achievements at work.
At that time, Mr. Hoa was the youngest principal in China. Busy with school management, the teacher still looked for business opportunities. After hearing many stories of his friends starting businesses, in 2000, he decided to resign as principal to switch to business.
Start from scratch
In 2002, his high school friend planned to invest in real estate. Wanting to find a business project, Mr. Hoa did not hesitate to immediately invest in this field.
The real estate market in China was booming at that time. Confident that he would succeed, he quickly got to work. In 2003, he and five friends founded Creative Construction Model Co., Ltd., specializing in providing real estate sand table models.
Of the 6 shareholders, only 1 had experience in the real estate sector. Therefore, after a few months of establishment, the company suffered heavy losses. Faced with this situation, 3/6 shareholders decided to withdraw.
After the shareholders withdrew, the company signed its first contract at the end of 2003, bringing in a profit of 1 million yuan (3.4 billion VND). Since then, with the strong development of real estate in Hunan (China), the company's business activities have increased.
After 5 years of building Creative Construction Model Company Limited, in 2008, Mr. Hoa separated to establish a new factory providing real estate sand table models in the Lugu International Industrial Park (China). The development of the company opened a new turning point from sand table model business to urban planning and museum design.
In 2009, Mr. Hoa founded Hunan Huakai Cultural Creation Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Huakai Company). While working, he discovered that in the process of urban planning and museum design, sand table models, decorative items and flooring... accounted for about 10% of the total budget.
Therefore, he gave direction to Hoa Khai, in addition to providing overall design, to combine with many other companies to create a 'total package', to save maximum costs for investors and facilitate the working process.
This business strategy helped Hoa Khai Company develop by leaps and bounds. In 2010, after the Shanghai World Expo Museum was launched, the need to expand business from building exhibition halls to displaying objects at the museum was of interest to urban cultural centers and many businesses.
In 2010 alone, the company's revenue exceeded 100 million yuan (340 billion dong). His efforts were duly rewarded, on January 20, 2017, Hoa Khai Company was listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. This meant that the value of the shares he held at the age of 49 increased to 440 million yuan (1,530 billion dong).
When asked about his business secret, he shared: "To easily work with partners, we should have a spirit of concession, I am willing to share profits with them. I think a big cake should be cut into many small pieces. If the cake is small, even if eaten, it is only a small piece." The advantage of exploring and discovering new things has helped CEO Tan Hoa encounter many business opportunities.
After 24 years of resigning as principal to do business, now at the age of 56, his estimated assets are over 4 billion NDT (13,800 billion VND). Recalling his start-up story, he confided that he encountered many difficulties because he had no money, resources, or connections. However, the management experience he accumulated as principal created favorable conditions for him to do business and lead the company.
