After the meal, both patients choked on foreign objects. One in Dong Nai had a bad cough and the other in Binh Phuoc had painful swallowing. Examination revealed dangerous foreign objects in the digestive tract and respiratory tract.

On January 22, according to information from the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, doctors successfully performed surgery to remove foreign objects from the airways and food passages of two patients.
Previously, on January 16, a 58-year-old female patient living in Dong Nai went to the ENT Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for examination because of dry cough and chest pain.
The patient said that 5 days before going to the doctor, he had a cough and choked while eating a hot pot meal containing meat and fish... After that, he had a continuous dry cough and chest pain that affected his daily activities.
Through examination and CT scan of the neck, the team led by Dr. Le Thanh Lam - head of the shift and Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan discovered a foreign object longer than 1.5cm in the lower lobe bronchus of the lung.
Doctors performed endoscopic bronchial surgery to remove the foreign object, a sharp piece of bone about 1.5cm in size.
At the same time, another 47-year-old female patient, residing in Binh Phuoc, was also hospitalized due to suspected choking on a bone. Previously, this patient had visited a private hospital and taken medicine but it was ineffective.
According to the medical history, 10 days before being admitted to the hospital, the patient had pain when swallowing after eating rice with braised fish, so he thought he had a bone stuck in his throat. The patient went to a private hospital for examination, and had an endoscopy but no foreign object was found. The patient was given medication but the pain did not improve, and the pain gradually increased.
At the ENT Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, the CT scan results of the neck showed a foreign object longer than 20mm in the esophageal mouth, standing vertically, at the level of the C5 cervical vertebra.
BSCK2 Nguyen Tuong Duc - deputy head of the general pediatrics department - performed a rigid laryngoscopy to remove a foreign object, a 20mm long zinc wire, from under the esophageal mucosa. Doctors suspect that this zinc wire came from a rice sieve!
After surgery, both female patients are in stable health. Doctors expect both patients to be discharged in 1-2 days, in time to return home to celebrate Lunar New Year.
Symptoms of choking on foreign objects
BSCK2 Nguyen Tuong Duc said that when choking on a foreign object in the digestive tract, the patient may have symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, painful swallowing, choking, difficulty eating or painful swelling in the neck area.
If you suspect you are choking on a foreign object, you should go to the nearest medical facility for treatment. If left for a long time, the foreign object can cause esophagitis, more seriously, it can cause a neck abscess, and pus from the abscess can spread to the mediastinum (where the heart is one of the body's vital organs), endangering your life.
For foreign objects entering the airway, patients may have invasive syndrome such as coughing, cyanosis, difficulty breathing, and respiratory contractions.
According to Dr. Le Thanh Lam, some cases of forgotten foreign objects in the airways may have symptoms such as prolonged coughing, chest pain or coughing up blood, but medical treatment in many places does not improve.
"Depending on the type of foreign object, it can cause different complications. For example, an inert metal foreign object will cause few complications but can move to dangerous structures.
Foreign objects such as seeds, fish bones, chicken bones, etc. can easily cause surrounding infections leading to pneumonia, mediastinitis, or abscesses...
