According to the plan, the measles vaccination campaign will focus on children from 6 months to under 9 months old, including children who are transient in Hanoi. With the goal of achieving a 95% vaccination coverage rate for this group of children, the campaign will be implemented in 100% of communes, wards and towns in 30 districts, towns and cities across the city.
The campaign will start in February 2025, and in the following months, vaccination sites will continue to vaccinate children at 6 months of age and catch-up vaccinations for children from 7 months to under 9 months of age who have not been vaccinated.
The City People's Committee requires localities to organize vaccinations at health stations, medical centers or other fixed vaccination points.
Mobile emergency teams will be deployed at vaccination sites to promptly handle post-vaccination reactions. In addition, inspection and monitoring before, during and after the campaign will be strictly implemented to ensure safe vaccination for children.
The Hanoi Department of Health will coordinate with departments, sectors and organizations in disseminating and encouraging people to vaccinate their children against measles. The authorities will also investigate the subjects and preserve the vaccines according to regulations.
According to the surveillance system, the number of new measles cases is increasing, especially among children under 9 months old, who are not eligible for measles vaccination under the national immunization program.
Hanoi is also a place with high population density and large population movements, easily creating conditions for measles to spread. Many children under 1 year old have contracted measles and had to be hospitalized, including serious cases.
At the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, many measles cases are being treated, especially in children under 1 year old. One of the notable cases is baby LTC, who was admitted with symptoms of high fever, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, and after three days of no improvement, a red rash appeared from the face down to the body and limbs. The baby was diagnosed with measles and is receiving intensive treatment.
Another serious case is NTQ, a 6-month-old baby, who had measles with severe pneumonia complications. The child required emergency intervention, intubation and breathing support. After 5 days of treatment, the baby showed positive progress but still needs long-term monitoring.
Doctors recommend that parents fully comply with the vaccination schedule and take their children for vaccination on time. In particular, measles vaccination not only helps protect children from the risk of disease but also prevents dangerous complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, malnutrition, etc.
Measles vaccination helps create community immunity, protecting not only children but also those around them, especially those with weak immune systems.
Dr. Le Thi Thu Hien, one of the doctors treating at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that measles vaccination is the most effective preventive measure to avoid serious complications. Vaccination of children against measles on schedule is necessary to protect health and minimize the risk of measles in the community.
Measles is a disease that can be easily prevented through vaccination. However, if not detected and treated promptly, the disease can lead to serious complications. Therefore, parents need to strictly follow the vaccination schedule and promptly take their children to a medical facility when detecting symptoms of measles.
