On October 25, the Pentagon announced that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and his South Korean counterpart Kim Yong Hyun will attend the 56th US-South Korea Security Consultative Meeting (SCM) in Washington DC on October 30.
The two sides are expected to discuss how to practically implement the US-ROK defense vision that they agreed on last year, as well as further strengthen the global comprehensive strategic alliance between the two countries.
In addition, the US and South Korean defense leaders will assess the security situation on the Korean Peninsula in relation to Pyongyang's deployment of troops to Russia, discuss cooperation policies to deal with North Korea and measures to enhance extended deterrence, as well as comprehensive cooperation in the defense sector.
The meeting was also attended by senior officials from the two countries in the fields of defense and diplomacy.
On this occasion, Mr. Kim Yong Hyun will lay a wreath at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, and visit a US agency researching manned and unmanned aircraft complex systems.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula has been the focus of regional and international attention over the past week. With continuous moves to increase tensions, the risk of conflict on the Korean Peninsula is becoming increasingly real.
