Strange chickens with bright colors and long tail feathers are attracting the attention of many people when displayed at the Supe Lam Thao Flower and Ornamental Plant Festival (Phu Tho). Among them, there are native chicken breeds of Vietnam, some breeds imported from Malaysia, Indonesia...

Recently, we had the opportunity to attend the first Lam Thao Super Phosphate and Chemical Flower and Ornamental Plant Festival, organized by Lam Thao Super Phosphate and Chemical Joint Stock Company. The festival attracted many owners of precious orchid gardens and ornamental plant clubs in the area to participate.

At the festival, many visitors expressed their excitement when seeing for the first time the ornamental chickens with extremely colorful feathers, especially the chickens with extremely unique long tail feathers.

Talking to Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Hoang Quoc Truong, Vice President of Hung Vuong Ornamental Chicken Club said that this is the first time he and the club members brought ornamental chickens to the Supe Lam Thao Flower - Ornamental Creature Festival. Here, there are on display endemic chicken breeds of Vietnam and some breeds originating from Malaysia and Indonesia.

For example, the Tan Chau bantam chicken (An Giang) - a breed of chicken considered to be indigenous to Vietnam. The Tan Chau bantam chicken has a rather small body, stands out with its colorful feathers, thick and long tail. In particular, with mature chickens, carefully cared for, they can sometimes be a meter long (including body and tail length).

"This breed of chicken is most beautiful with its long, smooth feathers. Once I borrowed a chicken from a club member to take to an exhibition. Unfortunately, during transportation, I lost a feather and had to pay the chicken's owner several million dong," said Mr. Truong.

According to Mr. Truong, because of its beautiful feathers and slim body, Tan Chau bantam chickens are classified as precious ornamental chickens and are quite expensive, ranging from 7-10 million VND/chicken.

Not only possessing beautiful colorful feathers and a majestic posture, Tan Chau roosters also stand out with their loud and clear crowing. Although this breed of chicken is aggressive, it is very friendly with humans and easy to care for.

"Tan Chau ornamental chickens only eat corn, rice, and bran like normal chickens. This breed of chicken was very popular with kings in the past and was often raised as pets," said Mr. Quyen.

In addition, at this Festival, Hung Vuong Ornamental Chicken Club also brought some strange chicken breeds originating from Malaysia and Indonesia.

Serama chicken is a breed of ornamental bantam chicken, quite small in size, weighing only about 300 - 500 grams. This chicken breed originates from Malaysia, with a selling price ranging from 25 - 30 million VND/pair.

The Serama bantam breed has a regal beauty, a slim body with a full chest, and erect tail feathers, so it was introduced to Vietnam in recent years. Newly hatched Serama chickens are also quite expensive, from 500,000 VND to 3 million VND/chicken.

In some countries like Malaysia, Serama chickens even surpass dogs and cats as pets. Their friendly and tame personality is one of the main characteristics that makes Serama chickens quite popular pets around the world.

Regarding how to choose and care for ornamental chickens, Mr. Hoang Quoc Truong, Vice President of Hung Vuong Ornamental Chicken Club, said that if you are a new player, you should choose to buy chickens that are about 2-3 months old or older because they have better resistance. You should pay attention to choosing chickens with smooth feathers, a balanced shape, and a beautiful red comb.

Each bantam chicken needs about 0.2 - 0.3m2 of space; the coop should be placed in a dry, airy place, away from direct sunlight and not flooded when it rains. Dry sand or sawdust, rice husks should be spread at the bottom of the coop to easily clean up chicken manure.

Disinfect the coop at least once a month with a specialized solution to kill bacteria and parasites. Ensuring a biosafe environment is extremely important for chickens to grow healthy and have shiny feathers.

Bantam chickens are suitable for foods such as bran, rice, and ground corn. In addition, you can supplement green vegetables, beans, and some protein-rich foods such as insects and earthworms. Calcium can be supplemented from shells or crushed bones to help strengthen bones and feathers.

Regarding drinking water, make sure it is clean and change the water every day to prevent the chicken from getting digestive diseases.
