From May 22 to June 2, in Geneva, Switzerland, the 19th General Assembly of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) took place.
Professor Tran Hong Thai is the Acting President of the Asian Meteorological Association Region II.
Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai - Director General of the General Department of Hydrometeorology, permanent representative of Vietnam at WMO, Vice President of the Asian Meteorological Association Region II, Head of the Vietnamese delegation and other members attended the 19th session of the WMO General Assembly (Cg-19).
The World Meteorological Congress is the highest authority of WMO, first held in 1951 and held every four years, to decide on general policies and adopt WMO's strategic plan, and elect key WMO officials.

At this session, Mr. Abdulla Ahmed Al Mandous, Director of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Meteorological and Seismological Authority, Chairman of RAII was elected as WMO President for the 2024-2027 term.
Ms. Celeste Saulo, Director of the Argentine Meteorological Service, was elected as WMO Secretary-General for the 2024-2027 term.
According to WMO regulations, the current Vice President of RAII, Professor Dr. Tran Hong Thai, Director General of the General Department of Hydrometeorology (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment), will assume the position of Acting President of RAII, and is also a member of the WMO Executive Council.
Professor Tran Hong Thai will directly manage RAII until the agency organizes an election for the position of RAII President for the 2024-2027 term.
RAII countries also congratulated RAII Acting President Tran Hong Thai at the RAII consultation meeting ahead of the WMO Executive Council election meeting.
Mr. Tran Hong Thai was born in 1974, from Ha Tinh. He is a professor and doctor specializing in earth sciences and mathematics. Mr. Thai received his doctorate from Heidelberg University (Germany) in 2005.
The Asia Meteorological Association Region II (RAII) is an organization under WMO including Vietnam and 34 other WMO members in the Asian region. Vietnam has participated in RAII since it became a member of WMO. In 2019, a representative of Vietnam was elected as Vice President of RAII, and in 2021, he was re-elected as Vice President of RAII.
