(CLO) Doctors have changed Pope Francis' treatment to deal with a complicated respiratory infection, and he will remain in hospital as long as necessary, the Vatican announced on Monday.
Pope Francis has been suffering from a respiratory infection for more than a week and was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome last Friday.

"The results of tests carried out in recent days and today have shown that the Pope has a respiratory infection of a multi-bacterial type, which has led to an adjustment of the treatment. His clinical condition is quite complicated, requiring continued hospitalization," the Vatican said in a statement, adding that the Pope's condition is stable and he has no fever.
From the hospital, the Pope continued to make calls to the only Catholic parish in Gaza, according to Father Gabriel Romanelli, a priest working in the territory.
The Vatican said the Pope was still working and reading documents on Monday. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni did not specify whether the Pope had a bacterial or viral infection.
According to Rev. Dr. Andrea Vicini, a priest and medical doctor, the term "polymicrobial infection" can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi.
Pope Francis, who has been head of the Catholic Church since 2013, has suffered from health problems over the past two years.
As a young man, he had pleurisy and had part of his lung removed. He has been prone to lung infections recently and has a history of flu.
Many Catholics have expressed their concern and hope for the Pope's quick recovery. Father Tyler Carter from the US shared: "We pray for his quick recovery. He is our common father and our guide, we need his presence and blessing."
