Oil prices were little changed on Monday, supported by positive economic news from China but pressured by the potential negative impact from US tariffs as traders remained concerned about the Russia-Ukraine war.
Brent crude futures fell 10 cents, or 0.1%, to $72.71 a barrel at 11:49 a.m. ET (1649 GMT). U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 20 cents, or 0.3%, to $69.56.

On Sunday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the tariffs on Canada and Mexico will take effect on Tuesday but President Donald Trump will decide whether to maintain the planned 25% tariffs.
“Tariffs may slow economic growth and oil demand, but they also limit oil supply as they hit oil producers like Canada and Mexico,” said PVM analyst Tamas Varga.
Canada’s oil drilling and services industries are showing signs of slowing down in the face of the threat of tariffs. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her country is ready no matter what Washington decides.
China, the second-largest economy after the United States, said it was preparing countermeasures to tariffs targeting the US agricultural sector.
Crude oil prices were supported in early trading by data showing manufacturing activity grew at its fastest pace in three months in February. However, recent reports of weaker U.S. consumer demand have raised concerns about a recession.
Trump’s tariff plans also raise inflation concerns at the US Federal Reserve, which could prompt the Fed to keep interest rates high for longer, which could slow economic growth and energy demand, analysts said.
Concerns about the impact of a potential economic slowdown on oil demand have weighed on WTI prices, which have fallen about 10% over the past six weeks.
That prompted speculators to cut their net long positions in futures and options on the Intercontinental and New York Mercantile Exchanges last week to the lowest since a record low of 30,623 contracts in December 2023, according to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission's Commitments of Traders report.
