Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for October 2025 delivery fell 21 yuan to 3,231 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures fell, pressured by concerns about the demand outlook in top consumer China after steelmakers cut output, reducing demand for the ore.
The most-traded iron ore contract for May on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 0.83 percent to 778 yuan ($107.12) a tonne.
China has announced its intention to curb steel production in China due to overcapacity. Although there has been no official announcement yet, some steelmakers have voluntarily cut production in preparation for the official announcement, thus limiting demand for iron ore.
China’s steel industry is currently facing overcapacity of more than 50 million tonnes, a figure that is expected to rise to 250 million tonnes over the next decade. Moreover, concerns about the demand outlook, exacerbated by the escalation of the global trade war triggered by new US tariffs, are also putting pressure on prices.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE were flat, with metallurgical coal and coking coal DCJcv1 down 1.2% and 1.79%, respectively.
Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell. Rebar fell 0.53%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.65% and wire rod (SWRcv1) fell 0.44%, while stainless steel rose 0.15%.
