ANTD.VN - With a selling price of only nearly 50,000 VND/kg, cherry prices in the Vietnamese market are "unprecedentedly cheap".
Cherry prices are at an all-time low. |
Ms. Ngo Tam (a fruit trader) on February 14th advertised a 5kg box of cherries for only 249,000 VND. “The price of cherries has never been this cheap. 1kg of cherries is only 50,000 VND, equivalent to a kilo of good guava,” Ms. Tam said.
The seller also described the condition of the fruit as having both hard and soft fruits, which is why the price was deeply discounted. If all the fruits were hard, the original price would be 1.2 million VND/5kg box. If the hard and soft fruits were separated, many sellers said they would get a better price, but it would be a lot of work. But just a few hours after posting this price, Ms. Ngo Tam said she was out of stock.
Meanwhile, another seller on Facebook also said that they will sell cherries for 180,000 VND/kg today. This is also considered a very low price for this fruit in recent years.
At clean fruit stores, cherries are still sold for no less than 250,000 VND/kg. Similarly, at markets and fruit stalls, cherries are sold for prices ranging from 150,000 to 200,000 VND/kg.
Talking about the reason for the surprisingly low price of cherries, a trader said that this year, Chile (a country that grows a lot of cherries) had a good harvest. Meanwhile, recently, 1,353 containers of cherries were on the Maersk Saltaro ship that were delayed in being exported to China to serve consumer demand during the Lunar New Year.
These goods are sold by exporters to countries neighboring China, so the price of cherries is reduced.
Cherries are one of the favorite fruits in Vietnam. However, due to their high price, only the “well-off” often buy and use them. According to the customs agency, in 2024, Vietnam spent 48.5 million USD importing cherries from many countries, a slight decrease of 0.7% compared to the previous year. In December 2024 alone, the import volume suddenly increased again thanks to cheap goods from Chile.
