Fresh areca nut prices increase sharply, farmers happily welcome bumper harvest
Mr. Y' Phuoc Nie, a farmer in Ea Ktur commune, Cu Kuin district, Dak Lak province, could not hide his joy when mentioning the areca trees planted in his coffee and pepper gardens, the price of fresh areca trees is sky high at this time. His family has about 400 areca trees from 8 to 14 years old.
The price of fresh areca nuts is increasing day by day in Dak Lak and has now reached a record price of 85,000 VND/kg, surpassing the record price of durian.
"Last year, the price of areca nuts at the beginning of the season was only 30,000-40,000 VND/kg, but by the end of the season, the price dropped to only 3,000-5,000 VND/kg. We couldn't sell them, so we had to leave the red, ripe areca nuts on the tree," Mr. Y' Phuoc shared.
But this year, everything is different, the starting price of areca nuts was up to 50,000 VND/kg and has now reached over 85,000 VND/kg, making Mr. Y' Phuoc Nie's family extremely happy.
Also unable to hide her joy when looking at the areca clusters laden with fruit, Ms. H'Bliak in K'Ram hamlet, Ea Tieu commune, Cu Kuin district (Dak Lak province) said that her family only planted areca trees between coffee and durian gardens and around fences, but because the price of areca trees has increased, this year she also earned nearly 100 million VND.
"Thanks to intercropping many types of trees such as coffee, pepper, durian and areca, my family always has a steady and stable source of income," said Ms. H'Bliăk with a bright smile on her lips.
Ms. H'Bliak, Buôn K'Ram, Ea Tieu commune, Cu Kuin district (Dak Lak province) happily talked with reporters about the bumper areca crop with good prices.
The joy of the areca season has also come to the family of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ha in Ea Tu commune, Buon Ma Thuot city. Mrs. Ha shared that since the beginning of the season, traders have come to buy 6-7 times of areca at her house, each time from 2-3 quintals of fresh areca with the price ranging from 60,000-85,000 VND.
The fruit season has not ended yet, but up to now, selling areca nuts has brought nearly 100 million VND to Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ha's family.
"With the current price of fresh areca nuts, each areca tree can bring in millions of dong in profit. This year, not only areca nuts, but also agricultural products such as pepper, coffee, and durian have increased, making farmers like us extremely excited. People are all expecting a bumper crop, with more income to cover their living expenses," said Ms. Ha.

Mr. Dang Van Hai in Cu Ne commune, Krong Buk district, (Dak Lak province) also excitedly said: "Every 20 days, I harvest once. Every year, areca trees are harvested from June to November of the lunar calendar, divided into 4-5 batches. In particular, the 2nd-3rd batch is the time for the highest yield."
After only the first two harvests, Mr. Hai sold nearly 1 ton of fresh areca nuts at a price of 60,000-85,000 VND/kg, earning more than 70 million VND.
"Areca palms require little investment and little care, but bring good income, especially when areca palm prices are good like this year. All farmers are excited," Mr. Hai said with a smile.
According to Mr. Dang Van Hai, although durian has high value, with each fruit being able to sell for up to a million dong, durian is only "second in line" compared to the profit from fresh areca nuts this year.
Compared to other crops, especially durian - the fruit that is making waves in the market, areca nut trees are currently occupying a high position in terms of income.

On the national highways in Dak Lak, the price of areca nuts has increased sharply, the bustling scene with the image of traders rushing to buy areca nuts has become familiar. Heavy bunches of areca nuts are loaded on trucks, creating a vibrant atmosphere of the harvest season.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc in Hoa Phu commune, Buon Ma Thuot city (Dak Lak province) shared that with more than 4 years of experience in the areca nut purchasing profession, every day he has to travel 40-80 kilometers, sneaking into every corner to search for and purchase fresh areca nuts.
"Although picking areca nuts is hard work, the income is worth the effort," Phuc confided.
Traders go to fresh areca gardens in Dak Lak to buy fresh areca. The price of fresh areca has skyrocketed, an unprecedented increase in Dak Lak at present, causing people to say that the price of durian is nothing, the price of fresh areca is hot.
Mr. Phuc also talked about the ups and downs of his career as an areca trader: "This year, the areca price is high, so my work is much busier.
We have to closely monitor the market, quickly find a source of quality fresh areca nuts, and ensure to purchase at a reasonable price to make a profit.
There are peak days when I can buy 300-400 kg of fresh areca nuts, earning millions of dong per day. Seeing farmers excited because the price of areca nuts has increased, I also feel happy. We do business as well as help people, everyone benefits."
Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc shared, "The price of areca nuts has increased so my work has become much busier."
The joy on the faces of farmers and traders in Dak Lak this year lies not only in the profit figures, but also in the hope for the stability of areca nut prices. Although there are still concerns about price fluctuations like in previous years.
