(CLO) On December 23, Eric Trump posted an article on social media, joking about the possibility that the US could buy territory on the Amazon, after his father, President-elect Donald Trump, announced that he would take back the Panama Canal and buy Greenland.
The post on X, captioned "We're back!", received more than 9,000 reactions, with some calling it "disrespectful" and "offensive," while others were supportive.
In the post, Eric Trump shared a photo of a map outlining the Panama Canal, Greenland and Canada, which appear to be items in an Amazon shopping cart, accompanied by a simulated image of his father looking at his phone with the Amazon app open.
The post, which has also been shared more than 14,000 times, comes after a similar post on December 21, in which Eric Trump responded to a post by the president-elect about Panama, saying: "The adults are back in charge."
Eric Trump’s post comes after the President-elect made pointed comments about owning and controlling Greenland, demanding that Panama return the Canal to the United States, and declaring that Canada could be the next U.S. state. These statements have received strong criticism from international leaders and experts.
The president-elect's first statement on US territorial expansion came after he announced tariffs on Mexico, China and Canada over immigration and the flow of fentanyl. He then suggested that Canada could "become the 51st state."
Mr Trump has also floated the idea of buying Greenland, an autonomous territory that is currently part of Denmark and has been part of Denmark for 600 years. The idea was met with strong opposition from Greenland's leaders earlier this week, who said, "We are not for sale." The president-elect has also threatened to demand that Panama return the canal if the Central American country does not reduce the fees it charges US ships.
Eric Trump's post was not well received by many people, but there were also opinions that this was just a joking way to welcome Donald Trump's return to the international arena.
