Reuters reported on April 21 that the incident occurred in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Local health officials said the overnight Israeli attack killed 19 people, including Sabreen Al-Sakani, a pregnant woman, as well as her husband and daughter.

Doctors performed an emergency cesarean section despite the mother’s death. The 30-week-old baby girl was born in a stable condition, weighing 1.4kg, according to Dr. Mohammed Salama. The baby girl was then placed in an incubator at a hospital in Rafah, along with another newborn baby.

A relative, Mr. Rami Al-Sheikh, said that Mrs. Sakani's young daughter Malak, when she was alive, expressed her wish to name her sister Rouh, which means "soul" in Arabic.

Dr Salama said the baby would be in hospital for three to four weeks. "After that we will consider where to take him, back to his family, to be raised by his aunts, uncles or grandparents. This is the biggest tragedy. Even if this child survives, he will be born an orphan," he said.

According to Palestinian health officials, in addition to Ms. Sakani’s family, 13 children from another family were killed in the Israeli attack. Two women were also killed in the house.

Asked about the casualties in Rafah, an Israeli military spokesman said they had struck multiple military targets in Gaza, including military facilities and armed men.

More than half of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have flocked to Rafah, seeking shelter from the Israeli offensive that has devastated much of the territory over the past six months. The Israeli military is planning a large-scale ground offensive in the city.
