xAI launched its first artificial intelligence (AI) model last weekend – a bot called Grok – to all X Premium subscribers. The startup wants to develop AI tools that “assist humanity in its quest for knowledge and understanding.” Grok is designed to solve problems in a playful way, based on the large Grok-1 language model.
Elon Musk believes that artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the biggest threats to humanity. |
Billionaire Elon Musk, who has criticized Big Tech's efforts to develop artificial intelligence (AI), launched xAI in July. He calls it a "maximum truth-seeking AI" that attempts to learn about the nature of the universe, in a bid to compete with Google's Bard and Microsoft-owned Bing AI.
"Grok has access to real-time information through the X social networking platform, which is seen as a big advantage over other models," Musk added.
Social network X is separate from xAI, but the two are closely related. xAI also works with Elon Musk's electric car maker Tesla and several other companies.
Last week, at the world’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Safety Summit, Musk told British Chancellor Rishi Sunak that AI is “the most disruptive force in history.” The technology can “do everything” as well as eliminate jobs.
In 2015, Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI – the company behind the now-famous ChatGPT super-bot – but resigned in 2018 after clashes with the board. He warned that AI was “one of the biggest threats to humanity” at an AI conference. “For the first time, we’re in a situation where something is going to be smarter than the smartest human,” he said.
