Hanoi's massive dike system has a total length of nearly 700 km. The dikes not only serve to prevent floods but also serve as roads.

The dikes are built to resemble the shape of the river, with few straight sections, often with soft curves, constantly changing direction. The dikes are specifically classified according to different levels of importance, with Hanoi alone having 627km of classified dikes. In the photo is the Huu Hong dike section (Phu Thuong, Tay Ho).

Hanoi has 37,709km of the Red Right Dike, a special-grade dike that directly protects the city center. The Red Right Dike in Tay Ho District is named An Duong Vuong Street.

Outside of Hanoi, the dikes in the suburbs or neighboring provinces are also busy traffic routes. In the photo is the dike on the left side of the Red River passing through Van Giang district (Hung Yen), classified as a level 1 dike, with a length of over 11.1km.

Soft curved sections of the dike look quite nice, but if there are many sharp curves, it is not good for fighting against flood water.

The dike is mainly built of earth, and has been restored and reinforced over many generations, but it still basically retains its original shape. The photo was taken at Ngoc Tao dike (Phuc Tho, Hanoi), a level 2 dike.

People living in areas where rivers flow through are grateful to the winding dikes. For generations, the dikes have protected prosperous villages, helping people live a peaceful life.

The Huu Chap dike section on the Cau River (Bac Ninh) with its beautiful curve has become a recreational destination for young people in the region.

Hanoi currently has nearly 627km of graded dikes, including nearly 38km of special grade dikes, nearly 250km of grade 1 dikes, 45km of grade 2 dikes, 72km of grade 3 dikes, 160km of grade 4 dikes, and 62km of grade 5 dikes. In addition, the city has 43 dike routes, dykes, and specialized dikes with a total length of more than 144km.

A section of the dike in Son Cong commune (Ung Hoa, Hanoi) is part of the Day River dike system.

The dike system is a heritage that has appeared in the North since the beginning of the 6th century. Initially, it was just a dyke, a regional dyke serving to block water locally within a narrow area of a residential area. Photo of a grade 1 dike of the Red River, Hung Yen.

Peaceful afternoon on the level 2 dike in Phuc Tho district (Hanoi). The green grassy dike is often the place where rural people have grazed buffalo, cows, goats... for generations.
