Considered "plagiarism"
This student recounted: "I heard the lecturer remind me that using AI to write an essay would be considered plagiarism if discovered, but I didn't know the lecturer would detect it. The other day the lecturer handed out the paper, I fainted when I received my score because she discovered that the paper used AI and deducted points."
This student said that after listening to the lecturer's explanation, he understood that in addition to AI, using translation software from Vietnamese to English also risks being considered AI, and will also be checked for plagiarism.
"I hope my story will be a lesson for you to be more careful when studying writing subjects. I got 50% of my score deducted, I don't know if I can pass this subject," this student shared.

It is known that there are currently dozens of AI tools that can be used to create content based on keywords or questions, which is a powerful tool for many professions in many fields, including education and training.
Sharing about this issue, a representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology said: "The school does not prohibit students from using AI to support their studies. However, lecturers and students must be transparent, clearly state the name of the AI tool used and clearly understand the limitations of AI."
According to this representative, the school has developed a number of AI applications based on OpenAI's API for lecturers and students to use to improve learning and teaching efficiency. "In addition, faculties are actively changing their methods of assessing learners to adapt to the increasing use of AI. When necessary, the school uses some paid services to detect the use of AI," the representative of the University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology added.
Support tools, not "think for you, do for you"
Dr. Tran Huu Duy, Head of Training Department of Dalat University, said that the school currently has no specific regulations on students using AI to do tests, essays, and theses.
"However, when writing essays or theses, there is a grading or defense committee. If a lecturer detects that a student is using AI, he or she will be failed. In my opinion, AI is like Google, it is a support tool. If you know how to use it to support your studies, it is very good. But if you copy exactly for a graded lesson, it is definitely not acceptable," Dr. Duy shared.
Master Nguyen Thi Xuan Dung, Director of the Media Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said that students using AI to write essays, theses, reports... is also a way to apply technology to study, research and future work.
"But we should only consider AI as an assistant to effectively support learning and work, thereby having more sources of reference information to select and systematize knowledge, understand problems and solve problems in our own way, not simply copying knowledge. Using it like that, AI will definitely be effective," said Master Dung.
Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr. Do Phu Tran Tinh, Head of the Economics Department at the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said that he allows students to use AI because if he bans it, it will go against the trend of the 4.0 era. However, Associate Professor Dr. Tinh will use software to check for plagiarism.
"In the 4.0 era, traditional teaching and assessment methods must be changed. It is important to evaluate students' ability to synthesize, analyze, and be creative. They will be aware of the consequences if they depend on technology. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training and schools need to research and come up with general regulations and lecturers should only advise and warn students," Associate Professor, Dr. Tinh commented.
For Hoa Sen University, the regulations on this matter are more specific. Mr. Nguyen Tien Lap, Head of Training Department, said: "In case a student plagiarizes from 20% to 50% of the entire paper, the lecturer will ask the paper to be rewritten and deduct 25% to 50% of the entire paper's score. In addition, the student must write an essay about the impact of plagiarism in about 500 words or must participate in a specialized activity on plagiarism organized by the school. If the student does not comply within 2 weeks, he/she will receive a disciplinary decision of reprimand at the school level."
According to Mr. Lap, this is the current regulation related to plagiarism for the act of using AI tools to write essays and theses at the school. "The school is particularly concerned about this issue and is developing and updating the academic integrity regulations, specifying each form of handling," Mr. Lap added.
