According to reader Lai Thi Ngoc Hanh, in today's era, the GPT Chat application is being used by many students.
But instead of turning artificial intelligence (AI) into a tool to better serve learning, some students have copied it "entirely", making teachers both laugh and cry.
The following story was sent to Tuoi Tre Online by a reader to add perspective on the use of artificial intelligence.
"Teacher! It's not just on November 20 that I remember you"
On Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20, I received a very long congratulatory message from a student as follows:
"1. Thank you very much. You are our teachers, who give us advice and dreams to build our lives.
2. I wish I could express my gratitude to you. However, it is difficult to express it in words. I just hope this small card can express a part of my deepest gratitude from the bottom of my heart.
3. Teacher! I don't only think of you on November 20th. For me, every day is November 20th. I wish you happiness and pride in your students forever.
4. On Vietnamese Teachers' Day. Your teaching never ends. There is no end to my gratitude. Wishing you health, peace and happiness.
5. On the occasion of Vietnamese Teachers' Day, I would like to send you my best wishes. I wish you good health and steady progress in your career path."
After reading this long greeting, I felt worried. It was clearly a greeting written by Chat GPT - currently trusted by many students.
The worrying thing here is that the student copied the greeting written by Chat GPT without reading it, leading to a ridiculous situation: the recipient was her, but the greeting was written as "teacher", and there was even a part where she called her "friend"!
Moreover, the message did not include any small card as the wishes were written.
This shows that this student had too much trust in artificial intelligence, thinking that Chat GPT was always correct in every command.
Will students lose their ability to think, reason, and evaluate?
To do a test, in a class, when I asked students to answer the content of the viewpoint on the standard of loving people and related to themselves, what actions did the students take to show love for people?
A student answered me: to show love for humanity, you have to do A, you have to do B…
I repeat the question: refer to yourself, not to anyone in general.
Did you get this answer from Chat GPT? The student smiled shyly and admitted that he did use Chat GPT.
The question was not difficult, but instead of thinking for themselves, students asked Chat GPT to think for them and did not evaluate whether the answer was right or wrong.
It seems that based on Chat GPT in particular and artificial intelligence tools in general, laziness in thinking has become a habit of a part of students, to the point that it has become normal.
This habit will be extremely dangerous for students in the long run, because if they depend too much on artificial intelligence, at some point students will lose the ability to think, reason, evaluate, and even believe in the answers of artificial intelligence more than in themselves.
Along with the trend of depending on AI is the habit of using social networks for many hours a day to watch videos with entertaining content, even useless and silly content just for fun, instead of interacting directly with real people.
It is no coincidence that the word Brain rot was chosen by Oxford University Press as the word of the year 2024.
"Brain rot" is defined as the mental or intellectual deterioration of a person, especially due to excessive consumption of trivial or worthless content.
Oxford University Press said the term had become more prominent in 2024 when it was used to highlight concerns about the impact of consuming too much low-quality online content, especially on social media.
Using artificial intelligence is an irreversible trend. But instead, humans must be proactive, not passive, letting artificial intelligence use them.
Students have the right to use artificial intelligence tools, but should not trust them completely, but need to read carefully, evaluate, and edit them appropriately.
