Mr. Vo Van Nam, Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Ben Tre province, said that in the near future, fresh Vietnamese coconuts will be officially exported to the US market.
Ben Tre is considered the “capital” of coconut in the country, with the total coconut area of the province estimated at over 78,000 hectares, an increase of 1.35% over the same period. The increased area is mainly green coconut for drinking water because of its stable economic efficiency compared to some other crops.
The total area of green coconut for drinking water in Ben Tre province is about 15,865 hectares, accounting for 20.53% of the total coconut area. Since the beginning of 2023, the province has developed 554 hectares of organic coconut, bringing the total area of coconut produced according to organic standards to 17,846 hectares (accounting for 22.9% of the total coconut area of the province), of which the certified area is 11,418 hectares. In particular, the area certified organic according to Japanese, EU, Chinese, Korean standards... has been continuously maintained and developed.
Up to now, the province has built 6 pilot concentrated coconut production areas, of which 5 areas produce according to organic standards and 1 area produces drinking coconut. After a period of building the coconut value chain, up to now, Ben Tre province has 32 cooperatives and 28 cooperatives participating in linking and organizing production with the support of 9 large enterprises in the coconut product chain.
To meet export supply and ensure product quality, the agricultural sector of Ben Tre province is focusing on developing raw material areas and improving the quality of coconut production chains at cooperatives and cooperatives in the area. At the same time, it is strengthening technology transfer, guidance, and updating information for coconut farmers and businesses to properly implement standards and regulations on official export goods.
