At first glance, this is just a story about a poor student overcoming difficulties. But when the public learned that Vy Nhan Long survived by picking up trash and waste materials during his studies, his name became a symbol of perseverance, inspiring millions of people.

A troubled childhood

Vy Nhan Long's life has never been easy. Born into a poor family, he suffered his first loss when he was 1 year old. His father died in a tragic work accident, and his mother raised him alone. When Nhan Long was 3 years old, she remarried. His stepfather treated him like his own son.

When Ren Long was 13, his mother suddenly passed away. His stepfather worked tirelessly to support his education. "Study well and get out of the mountains," his stepfather often told Ren Long.

Although he had terminal lung disease, he did not use the money for treatment but saved it for Nhan Long's education. Not long after that, his stepfather also passed away.

13-year-old Vy Nhan Long no longer has protection from relatives, only has 1,480 NDT (about 5.2 million VND) and is completely homeless.

The boy began collecting plastic bottles, scrap paper and metal cans to sell to scrap dealers. After school, he rummaged around for every penny to pay for his meals and tuition. Long saved every meal, sometimes a pack of instant noodles was enough for two meals. When he had no money, he did odd jobs like fishing, collecting wild herbs or making bamboo furniture.

Despite the difficulties in life, Long still maintained his academic achievements. Being ridiculed and isolated by his friends, the male student was determined to study to prove himself.

Vy Nhan Long often studied late at night under the street lamp because there was not enough light at home. As a result, he always ranked first in class and was secretly supported by his teachers with tuition and book support.

Want to help children like me

The day of the Gaokao exam arrived, and Vy Nhan Long sat in the exam room, thinking about his stepfather's last words. He understood that this was his only chance to change his fate. The results were announced, surprising everyone - 707 points, one of the highest scores in the province.

Now a senior at Peking University, Wei Renlong has never forgotten his roots. He still lives frugally and works part-time, saving money to help those in need.

He shared his story to inspire and remind people: "Knowledge is the most powerful weapon to change destiny."

When asked about his future, he did not hesitate. "After graduating, I want to return to my hometown. There are many children like me there, just needing a little help to help them rise up. I will be the one to do that."
