This morning (May 29), Vietnam Railways Corporation worked with the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism on promoting railway tourism activities.

At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, said that with the strategic goal of turning tourism into a spearhead economic sector, Vietnam has recently had many policies and solutions aimed at developing tourism quickly and sustainably, increasing both domestic and international tourists.

The results were impressive. In 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, international tourists to Vietnam reached more than 18 million, domestic tourists reached 85 million, with revenue of 3.2 billion USD.

The leaders of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Railways Corporation agreed to sign a memorandum of cooperation between the two sides to strengthen coordination and promote tourism by rail.

After going through the difficult period of Covid-19, in 2022, domestic tourism exploded with the number of visitors reaching more than 66 million people.

International visitors also reached 3.8 million thanks to the open tourism policy.

In 2023, these figures will continue to grow impressively with 12.6 million international visitors, more than 110 domestic visitors, revenue of 2.8 billion USD, recovering to about 70% of pre-pandemic levels. In the first 5 months of 2024 alone, the number of international visitors will reach 7.6 million, domestic visitors will reach 53 million.

"Contributing to this result is rail passenger transport. In particular, from 2022 to now, the railway industry has had many innovations and unique products, attracting more and more domestic and foreign tourists to travel by train.

Typically, the Hue - Da Nang heritage connection train, the Hanoi - Da Nang train, the Hai Phong food tour train... many times have to be booked many days in advance but still sold out, full of seats," said Mr. Khanh.

From the above positive picture, Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration Nguyen Trung Khanh suggested that Vietnam Railways Corporation closely coordinate with the Administration in developing programs and content to promote railways when promoting Vietnamese tourism to domestic and international tourism markets.

"The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism is ready to support the railway in promoting on tourism media channels and digital platforms; coordinate in training railway staff in improving the quality of tourist services on trains and at stations," Mr. Khanh affirmed.

On the railway side, Mr. Dang Sy Manh, Chairman of the Board of Members of Vietnam Railway Corporation, said that the railway is making efforts to implement innovative solutions for vehicles and services on trains and at stations to best exploit railway transport.

"In recent times, we have coordinated with localities and businesses to launch attractive railway tourism products, connecting cultural and heritage destinations, including industrial facilities, infrastructure works, and station architecture works such as: Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hue, Da Lat stations...

In particular, disadvantages such as long travel time and slow trains are turned into advantages with the increase of services and amenities on the train for customers who love experiences such as: cuisine, arts...

Thanks to that, passenger transport output has grown positively. In the first 5 months of 2024, it is forecasted that the number of passengers boarding the train will reach more than 2.7 million, an increase of nearly 15% compared to the same period in 2022," Mr. Manh shared.

According to Mr. Manh, in the coming time, the railway must still implement these solutions and orientations regardless of fluctuations in airfares or how far the expressway develops.

"The railway targets a specific customer base, especially tourists. We will build 5-star trains to serve luxury customers; charter trains with train components, itineraries, and routes according to customer requirements...", Mr. Manh said.

Agreeing with Director Khanh's opinion, Mr. Manh suggested that the two sides sign a memorandum of understanding to soon have specific cooperation products.

The leaders of Vietnam Railways Corporation also requested the Vietnam National Tourism Administration to support and coordinate in building a tourism model that links modes of transport such as air - rail - road to form a chain of tourist services (One ticket - all trips). On that journey, there are also destinations, tourism services...
