The startup representative said the commitment includes an upfront cash payment of $500 million and an additional $1.5 billion in investment in the near future.
Anthropic is the developer of Claude 2, a chatbot that competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT, and is used by companies like Slack, Notion, and Quora.
In addition to Google, the potential start-up founded in 2021 also received funding from Salesforce and Zoom. According to the valuation earlier this year, the company was valued at 4.1 billion USD.
Claude 2 is capable of summarizing text of up to about 75,000 words, equivalent to the length of a book. Users can input input from large data files and ask the AI to summarize the content in the form of a memo, letter or story. Meanwhile, ChatGPT's processing capacity is around 3,000 words.
Research by Arthur AI, a machine learning monitoring platform, found that Claude 2 is the most reliable chatbot in terms of “self-awareness,” meaning it accurately assesses what it knows and doesn’t know, and the system only answers questions it has training data to support.
Previously, in April 2023, Google invested $300 million to hold a 10% stake in Anthropic. That same month, the start-up was one of four AI companies invited by the White House to attend a meeting to discuss responsible AI development.
By May 2023, Anthropic had successfully raised $450 million, marking the largest funding round for an AI company since Microsoft invested in OpenAI, according to data from PitchBook.
Anthropic was founded by Dario Amodei, former Vice President of Research at OpenAI, and his sister, Daniela Amodei, Vice President of Policy and Safety at OpenAI. Several other former OpenAI research students are also part of the company's founding team.
Amodei shared in July 2023 that they focused on investing at least two months to develop the latest chatbot with a direct working team of 30 to 35 people and 150 staff supporting the model.
Anthropic's leadership also said the AI market is growing so rapidly that there are plenty of opportunities for new players to succeed.
“This is a really unusual time from a business perspective because there is so much demand for language models that it exceeds what the industry as a whole can supply,” Amodei said at the time.
