BHG - On February 19, the French Embassy delegation led by Mr. Oliver Brochet, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the French Republic to Vietnam visited and presented support funds from the Emergency Support Project for people affected by Typhoon Yagi in Quang Binh district. Accompanying them were representatives of Care International in Vietnam - the project's implementing unit; leaders of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Quang Binh district.

Storm No. 3 (Yagi) made landfall in Vietnam in early September 2024, causing severe damage in 28 northern provinces and cities. Heavy rains caused flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas, including Ha Giang province. In particular, storm No. 3 caused serious damage to houses, property, and crops in Quang Binh district, including Yen Thanh and Bang Lang communes. The whole district had 105 houses urgently evacuated, 289 houses damaged, more than 700 hectares of crops and flowers flooded and buried, and more than 170 hectares of forestry trees were broken. In order to join hands to support people in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, the People's Committee of Ha Giang province approved the project "Emergency support for people affected by storm No. 3 (Yagi) in Quang Binh district" funded by the French Government, through Care International in Vietnam.

The project aims to support households affected by storm Yagi in Yen Thanh and Bang Lang communes to stabilize and rebuild their lives, provide livelihoods... of which 194 households received multi-purpose cash support, 402 households received blankets and mosquito nets, 396 households received essential hygiene packages, 276 households received cash support to restore their livelihoods, 276 households received technical support to develop their livelihoods, renovate 1 clean water facility, and organize 2 communication events to promote hygiene practices. The project lasts from October 15, 2024 to June 30, 2025. The total implementation cost is over 4.6 billion VND. In the working program of the French Embassy this time, the project will provide funding to support 276 households to restore their livelihoods with a support level of 7 million VND/household.

Through the program of awarding support funds to households and visiting families affected by storm Yagi, the scene of landslides in Dong Tam village, Dong Tam resettlement area, Yen Thanh commune, Ambassador Oliver Brochet shared the damage and impacts that Quang Binh people had to endure during storm Yagi and natural disasters in 2024. The Ambassador was moved when witnessing the remaining images caused by landslides in Dong Tam village, Yen Thanh commune, Tien Yen village, Bang Lang commune. At the same time, he was pleased that the support of the French Government through the Care Organization was transferred to people affected by storm Yagi in Quang Binh. The Ambassador hoped that although the support from the project was not large, it could help people rebuild after the natural disaster and gradually stabilize their lives, no longer worrying about the impacts of natural disasters when moving to a new place.

Ambassador Oliver Brochet emphasized that the Emergency Support Project for people affected by Typhoon Yagi funded by the French Government demonstrates the solidarity and mutual support in difficult times of friends and the comprehensive strategic partnership between France and Vietnam that has been built by the leaders of the two countries over the years.

Before the activities in Quang Binh, the French Embassy delegation paid a courtesy visit to the leaders of Quang Binh district, grasped the general socio-economic situation and the need for support of the locality. The leaders of Quang Binh district thanked the Ambassador and the French Embassy for their attention and support, and hoped that the French Embassy would continue to pay attention and have more projects to support the ethnic minorities in the area, especially programs to support livelihoods, promote, introduce and consume local agricultural products and traditional handicrafts.
