(VTC News) - There are some special and noteworthy things from the trip to the United Nations General Assembly of General Secretary and President To Lam and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to the US.
General Secretary and President To Lam and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation are visiting the US to attend the Future Summit, the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. This is the first working trip to the US to participate in multilateral foreign affairs activities and work by the General Secretary and President in his new position.
In an interview with VTC News , Ambassador Bui The Giang (former Director of the Western Europe and North America Department, Central Foreign Affairs Commission) said that there are special things in this visit to the US by General Secretary and President To Lam.

"Vietnam joined the United Nations in 1977. This is the first time the General Secretary and President of our country has attended and directly delivered speeches at high-level meetings at the United Nations General Assembly.
Why is this special? It is because in many recent Party Congresses, Vietnam has affirmed that Vietnam is not only a 'friend and reliable partner' but also an 'active, proactive, and responsible member of the international community'. The trip was special, but the message Vietnam sent to the United Nations was even more special.
The fact that a country's leader speaks at a United Nations Conference must come from two sides, the request from the United Nations and the country's desire to speak. This shows that both the United Nations and Vietnam have consensus, the United Nations recognizes Vietnam's contributions and we appreciate the role of the United Nations," said Ambassador Bui The Giang.
According to Ambassador Bui The Giang, in recent times, Vietnam has made many proactive and positive contributions to the United Nations at both the direct level between Vietnam and the United Nations as well as at the level of United Nations activities at specialized agencies, forums, regions and different fields, in which Vietnam's participation in peacekeeping activities is a recent highlight that has been highly appreciated by the international community and the United Nations.
"The United Nations recognizes Vietnam's contributions and considers Vietnam a role model in poverty reduction, a role model in encouraging developing countries, underdeveloped countries, and poor countries. Role model means that the United Nations uses our experiences, policies, and measures as reference materials for countries with the same development level as Vietnam. What Vietnam has achieved in recent times has been respected and highly appreciated by the United Nations ," Ambassador Bui The Giang emphasized.
The visit to the US, the attendance at the United Nations General Assembly and the state visit to Cuba by General Secretary and President To Lam and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation had some notable points. For the US, this visit was unofficial, but coincided with the year when the two countries upgraded their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
The Vietnamese delegation visiting the US also shows that Vietnam values its relationship with the US, with many representatives from key agencies, departments and sectors participating. Ambassador Bui The Giang emphasized that the cooperative relationship with the US plays an important role for Vietnam at present, so the delegation needs to be commensurate. The US is currently a major trade partner and the largest export market of Vietnam. In the first 8 months of 2024 alone, the US was Vietnam's largest agricultural export market.
For Cuba, Cuba is a very special "friend" of Vietnam. The two countries are in two hemispheres but rarely have such a close relationship in the world. General Secretary To Lam has not visited Cuba for the first time, having visited Cuba in other positions, but this is the first time as the head of the Party and State. Therefore, the delegation participating in the visit must also meet the requirements of achieving the highest level of goals, serving the special relationship between Vietnam and Cuba.
Notably, during the Vietnamese delegation's visit to the US this time, General Secretary and President To Lam received and worked with major corporations in the world. According to Ambassador Bui The Giang, the corporations that General Secretary and President To Lam received and worked with were mainly from the US.
In his speech at the 10th Central Conference, General Secretary and President To Lam emphasized that the upcoming 14th Party Congress will "open a new era, an era of Vietnam's rise". This is the era of creating internal strength for Vietnam, linking Vietnam's cooperation with the world.
In the current context, to move quickly, strongly, and steadily, especially when we identify "shortcuts, three breakthroughs", the important step is scientific and technological innovation. This is the new pillar in the Vietnam - US relationship.
The fact that General Secretary and President To Lam met with corporations, including large technology enterprises, especially those in "key" and "core" technologies such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence, shows Vietnam's determination to promote economic cooperation. And American businesses are the ones leading in this field.
"The fact that General Secretary and President To Lam met with corporations, including large enterprises, not only reflects our wishes. We come, invite, and meet them, but they come to us, similar to the fact that in recent years, the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) has organized more visits to Vietnam each year than the previous year.
In March this year, a delegation of more than 50 of the largest US businesses came to Vietnam. That is our attraction and effectiveness, and at the same time shows the recognition of the foreign business community for Vietnam. Foreign businesses do not spend money on charity, they only do it when they see effectiveness," Ambassador Bui The Giang shared.
After a working visit to the US and attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly, General Secretary and President To Lam and his wife, along with a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, paid a state visit to Cuba at the invitation of First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic of Cuba Miguel Díaz Canel Bermúdez and his wife.
The official delegation accompanying General Secretary and President To Lam included Politburo members: Nguyen Hoa Binh, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister of the Government; Nguyen Trong Nghia, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Propaganda Department; General Phan Van Giang, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, Minister of National Defense; Senior Lieutenant General Luong Tam Quang, Minister of Public Security. On the side of the Party Central Committee Secretary: Chief of the Party Central Committee Office Nguyen Duy Ngoc; Head of the Party Central Committee's External Relations Commission Le Hoai Trung.
Also participating in the delegation were Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son; Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Duc Hai; Head of the Central Economic Commission Tran Luu Quang; Head of the Office of the President Le Khanh Hai; a number of Party Central Committee members who are ministers; City Party Secretary; Assistant to the General Secretary, Head of the Office of the General Secretary; Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States; Ambassador, Head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the United Nations; Vietnamese Ambassador to Cuba...
