Five more members of the Vietnamese athletics team have just left for Shanghai (China) for training (September 10) in preparation for the 19th ASIAD. This is a group of five "veteran" athletes including Nguyen Thi Oanh, Bui Thi Thu Thao, Nguyen Thi Huong, Nguyen Trung Cuong and Luong Duc Phuoc.

Athletes of the 400m and 400m hurdles teams including Nguyen Thi Huyen, Nguyen Thi Hang, Hoang Thi Minh Hanh, Nguyen Thi Ngoc and Hoang Thi Anh Thuc, along with coaches Vu Ngoc Loi and Nguyen Thi Bac, went to Shanghai from mid-August 2023.

Except for Tran Thi Nhi Yen who is still training in the short-distance running group and Nguyen Thi Thu Ha who is following a separate training program for the middle-distance running group in the country, the 10 athletes mentioned above have been and are actively training in Shanghai (China). This is the most important stage in the entire preparation plan of Vietnamese athletics with the goal of competing for high results at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

According to experts' forecasts, at the 19th ASIAD, the 18th ASIAD women's long jump champion Bui Thi Thu Thao does not have much hope of defending her gold medal and the 6.55 m achievement she won 5 years ago because she is no longer at the peak of her form, but the female athlete from Bac Giang, Nguyen Thi Oanh, can still compete for medals in Hangzhou... Nguyen Thi Oanh made a miracle by winning 4 gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia in May as well as winning a bronze medal in the 3,000 m hurdles and 4th place in the women's 1,500 m at the 2018 Indonesian Asian Games.

The event most expected to win an ASIAD medal is the women's 4x400m relay team. The quartet of Nguyen Thi Huyen, Nguyen Thi Hang, Hoang Thi Minh Hanh and Nguyen Thi Ngoc "shocked" when they defeated the entire Japanese running team to win the Asian gold medal in July. The 3 minutes 32 seconds 36 surpassed the 3 minutes 33 seconds 05 achievement that helped the team win the SEA Games 32 gold medal in Cambodia in May. The progress of the 4x400m running team is the basis for Vietnamese sports managers to include this event in the list of events with the potential to compete for a medal at the 19th ASIAD.

The 19th ASIAD athletics event will start on September 29, one week after the Asian Games opening ceremony.
