According to data from the Korean Film Council, a total of 55 Korean films were released in the first six months of the year, but only six films, namely “Tomb Raider,” “Siege: The Punisher,” “The Birth of Korea,” “Auntie’s Revenge,” “Stalker: The Perfect Crime,” and “Alien 2: The Battle of the Multidimensional,” attracted more than 1 million moviegoers.
Of these, “Grave Digger” reached 11.9 million views, “Siege: The Punisher” reached 11.4 million views, “The Birth of Korea” reached 1.1 million views, and “Picnic” reached 350,000 views, reaching the break-even point in the first half of this year.
According to the Korea Herald (Korea), at the present time, the fact that the work has the participation of an all-star cast does not help much in attracting audiences to theaters.
Take the movie “Alienoid 2: Multidimensional War,” released in January, starring Kim Tae Ri, Ryu Jun Yeol, and Kim Woo Bin. The break-even point was about 7 million tickets sold, but in reality, the movie only sold about 1 million tickets when it hit theaters.
Or the movie “Wonderland” by director Kim Tae Yong, starring Tang Wei, Suzy, Park Bo Gum, Jung Yu Mi, Choi Woo Sik and Gong Yoo, has only attracted 610,000 tickets since its release in Korea on June 5. In fact, the movie needs 2.9 million tickets to break even.
Son Seok-gu’s “Keyboard Warrior” also only managed 970,000 admissions, while its break-even point was nearly double that at 1.9 million tickets. Meanwhile, Kang Dong-won’s latest crime action film “The Plot” only filled about 520,000 seats, far short of its break-even point of 2 million.
While Korean films are expected to record lackluster performances, foreign productions are doing well in domestic theaters.
As with “Wonka” and “Dune: The Sand Planet – Part 2,” which attracted around 3.5 million and 2 million admissions, respectively, Pixar’s new animated film “Inside Out 2” is currently leading the local box office, with around 5 million admissions in about two weeks since its June 12 release in the country.
According to media reports, the end of June to August will be the peak season at Korean cinemas. Accordingly, more blockbusters, as well as light comedies, will be released to the market, with high expectations for revenue.
First up is the action comedy “Handsome Guys,” starring Lee Sung Min and Lee Hee Jun as two friends who dream of a peaceful life in the suburbs. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26.
Meanwhile, the action blockbuster “Project Silence” - one of the last works of the late actor Lee Sun Kyun - will be released on July 12.
Jo Jung Suk returns to the big screen after 5 years with the comedy “Pilot”, which will premiere on July 31 in Korea and August 2 in Vietnam. In the film, the actor plays Jung Woo, a pilot who was fired and had to borrow his sister’s identity and disguise himself to apply for a job.
In August, many films such as “Victory” (Victory) by Hyeri, “The Land of Happiness” (The Land of Happiness) by Jo Jung Suk and Lee Sun Kyun, “Because I Hate Korea” (Because I Hate Korea) by Go Ah Sung and “Revolver” (Revolver) by Jeon Do Yeon, Ji Chang Wook, Lim Ji Yeon are also scheduled for release.
Along with that, the potential blockbuster “Veteran 2” (Where to Run 2) - the sequel to the 2015 hit with 13.4 million tickets sold is expected to hit theaters in September and “Harbin” starring Hyun Bin as Korean independence activist Ahn Jung Geun is also revealed to hit theaters in December.
