(Fatherland) - On the 15th day of the first lunar month, vegetarian restaurants become popular destinations.
Hanoi is not short of vegetarian restaurants. Besides the big and beautiful vegetarian restaurants, there are also small restaurants serving different dietary needs. On the occasion of the 15th day of the first lunar month, let's visit a tiny vegetarian restaurant located in the center of Hanoi.
A popular vegetarian buffet restaurant in the center of Hanoi, customers sit and eat facing the wall.
Entering alley 18 Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi, passing by several rice and noodle shops outside, you will come across a vegetarian restaurant located far inside. Once inside, the owner gently guided us to where to get rice and told us to just get whatever we wanted to eat.
Vegetarian restaurant with sitting style... facing the wall.
This vegetarian restaurant is called Phuc An, and has a rather small space. Right outside the entrance, on the right hand side is the area for rice, soup, food, dishes, etc. Tables and chairs are placed close to the wall. Because the area is not large, diners will have to sit facing the wall. This way of sitting is a bit inconvenient and not suitable for large groups.
There are more than a dozen vegetarian dishes for customers to choose from such as: onion-marinated beans, coconut-fried vegetarian ribs, stir-fried vegetables, boiled vegetables...
On weekdays, there are about a dozen dishes here, the buffet price is 45,000 VND. On the 15th and 1st of the lunar month, the menu will be more diverse, including vegetarian vermicelli soup and the price is also a bit higher, 60,000 VND.
Besides white rice, there is also brown rice.
The dishes at the restaurant are quite diverse, mainly boiled or stir-fried, almost no fried. Rice also has 2 options, white rice or brown rice. Soup depends on each day. The food is displayed by the owner in stainless steel trays, creating a clean feeling. Everything here is very neat, from the counter to the dining table, when the customer finishes eating, the owner will bring out more.
The dishes here are mainly boiled, stir-fried, and soup, but there are no fried dishes.
Regarding the quality of the food, the dishes here are quite "good", the spices are seasoned moderately, easy to eat, when eating you can feel the freshness of the ingredients. The brown rice is fragrant and sticky, eaten with sesame salt is very delicious. The vegetables are boiled just right, dishes such as mushrooms, beans... are easy to eat. The owner shared that the vegetables were transported from her hometown in Phu Tho to Hanoi.
Because it is a buffet model, customers can eat as much as they want.
The cook has been changed countless times but the vegetarian food is still sold, and customers still come as a habit.
We came to the restaurant on a weekday, customers came and went continuously, mainly office workers around, sometimes there were also foreign customers passing by. However, perhaps few people know that the restaurant has changed chefs several times.
Everything here is pretty neat and clean.
The customers at the restaurant are many office ladies.
The owner, Ms. My, confided: "Before, the vegetarian restaurant here was run by an older woman, Ms. Tu Hao, so the restaurant was named after her. She was old and had poor health, so she couldn't do it anymore. Then she was transferred to Ms. Bich, the owner of the house here, to continue. But Ms. Bich recently passed away, so she was transferred to another woman. All of them were older women, and that woman also had poor health, so she stopped working for a while. Now I am the one who continues to run the vegetarian restaurant here. As a young person, I wanted to change things a bit, so I changed the name of the restaurant and renovated it."
When eating, you can feel the food is fresh and delicious.
Although the owner has changed several times, this place still maintains vegetarian food, because for decades, customers have become accustomed to having a vegetarian restaurant located inside this small alley. Not demanding a variety of dishes or a beautiful space, people come to this vegetarian restaurant simply because of the simplicity of the space and the food.
Ms. Hoai Anh, a bank employee who works nearby, shared: "Sometimes when I want to change the menu, I invite my colleagues to eat vegetarian food. I see that the restaurant has changed but I don't pay much attention because the food is still delicious. Here, there are about ten dishes to choose from, not too many but I think that's enough. I have lunch so I think it's quite reasonable. The restaurant is a bit small but it's on the street, going into a small alley to find a restaurant like this is also good."
As for Mr. Thang, also a regular customer here, he said: "I've been eating here for a long time, since the time I was the previous owner. Everyone has their own cooking style, but here it's family style. So I feel close and like eating at home."
The vegetarian restaurant is nestled inside a small alley.
