Meanwhile, local officials in the country of a billion people are also researching DeepSeek following the rise of this AI startup.
Over the weekend, the Guangdong-based Southern Daily reported that senior officials in Zhuhai “reviewed reports on DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng” at a recent meeting. The newspaper said this reflected the local government’s “expectations and confidence” in DeepSeek.
Several major cities in Guangdong province, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Dongguan, have integrated DeepSeek into their city government online services.
Guangzhou, for example, has begun using DeepSeek’s R1 and V3 AI models in its public portals to deliver more efficient services. The city will use the technology to explain policies to the public, handle hotlines, receive requests, improve internal workflows, and manage services.
Shenzhen - China's tech hub - became the first city in Guangdong to "fully deploy the DeepSeek AI model across all government agencies using a secure cloud platform", according to Xinhua.
Chinese President Xi Jinping held a rare meeting on February 17 with some of the biggest names in China's tech sector, including Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma and DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng.
However, outside of China, DeepSeek is receiving some negative news. On February 17, the Korean Data Protection Agency announced that DeepSeek was removed from app stores in the country after DeepSeek admitted to not complying with some of the agency's regulations on personal data protection.
Not only Korea, recently Ireland, France, Australia, Italy... have expressed doubts about DeepSeek's data processing activities.
