To have fields without pesticide shells

In Minh Xuan village, Xuan Hoa commune, people are currently using pesticides to prevent pests. Previously, along the fields and canals, packages, bottles, and used pesticides were thrown away haphazardly, but now this situation no longer exists. After spraying, people have proactively collected and put them in fixed tanks. The tanks are located at the beginning of the fields, near the roads leading to the fields, making it very convenient for people to travel and collect and dispose of their garbage.

Mr. Dinh Xuan Khoe, Minh Xuan village, Xuan Hoa commune shared: “Previously, farmers often threw garbage and plastic bags everywhere, but since the Farmers' Association mobilized the installation of storage tanks in the fields, farmers have become more proactive. After spraying pesticides, people follow the regulations, putting the packaging into the storage tank neatly and cleanly.”

Pointing to the pesticide packaging collection tanks located in the fields, Mr. Dinh Sau Vuong, Minh Xuan village, Xuan Hoa commune said: “People here have responded and are very responsible in implementing the model. Since the pesticide packaging-free field model was deployed, 90 households in the village have agreed to sign a commitment to no longer have pesticide packaging on the entire 9ha of rice fields in the village.”

Xuan Hoa is considered one of the localities that has implemented the construction of pesticide waste collection tanks in the fields early. Deployed since 2018, initially only 3 villages, Cau Loi, Quy Hop and Minh Xuan, were selected as "pilots". Up to now, over the implementation period, it has spread to 7/7 villages in the whole commune.

According to the Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Xuan Hoa Commune, Dinh Tien Dung, "To limit the situation of used pesticide packaging and bottles, the Farmers' Association of the commune has advised and directed associations and organizations to step up propaganda, integrate content into village and commune meetings, and mobilize members to participate. The commune also mobilized socialized funds to build tanks for storing packaging and pesticides in the fields; assigned members of the association to take turns collecting and treating waste in the tanks. Up to now, the environmental pollution in agricultural production in the commune has significantly decreased. In the fields, there is no longer a situation of people littering, especially pesticide containers and fertilizers."

In order to minimize the risk of environmental pollution caused by the harmful effects of waste from pesticides, in recent years, the Farmers' Association at all levels of Minh Hoa district has launched a movement to build tanks to store used pesticide containers in all communes and towns in the district. From contributions from the people and support programs from the State, up to now, nearly 1,100 pesticide containers have been built and placed in convenient locations for transportation, far from water sources, far from residential areas, distributed reasonably, convenient for people, without affecting the surrounding environment. It is estimated that since the implementation, tons of used pesticide packaging such as plastic bottles, glass, and nylon bags have been collected.

Mr. Dinh Hoang Long, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Minh Minh Hoa district, said: The Association continues to maintain the recognized model of "fields without pesticide shells" and expand the models. In addition to effectively implementing the model, the Associations at all levels also focus on promoting propaganda and raising people's awareness in keeping the fields safe; changing the habit of abusing pesticides in production, contributing to environmental protection, building clean and sustainable agriculture and implementing environmental criteria in building new rural areas.
