Promoting the application of science and technology in socio-economic development

At the scientific conference with the theme "Science and Technology of Soc Trang, 30 years of formation and development", Dr. Lam Van Man, Secretary of Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee, emphasized that the province is determined to research and apply science and technology to serve socio-economic development, contributing to the successful implementation of the goal of building Soc Trang province into a fairly developed province in the Mekong Delta region.

Promote socio-economic development

On November 18, a scientific conference with the theme “Science and Technology of Soc Trang: 30 years of formation and development” took place in Soc Trang. Attending the conference were Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat; Dr. Lam Van Man, Secretary of Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee; Dr. Phan Chi Hieu, President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; and representatives of institutes, schools, companies, enterprises...

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Duy, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Soc Trang province, said that after 30 years of development (1993-2023), the province's science and technology sector has made positive changes, closely following requirements and solving practical problems. Accordingly, the province has implemented 11 topics and projects under national science and technology programs; 228 provincial topics and projects, including 67 topics in the field of social sciences and humanities; 161 topics in the field of natural sciences. From the above results, science and technology research has been applied to production, improving productivity, quality and economic efficiency, contributing to promoting the successful implementation of the province's socio-economic goals.

MSc. Quach Thi Thanh Binh, Head of the Department of Fisheries of Soc Trang province, shared that promoting the application of science and technology in exploitation, aquaculture and processing for export has helped the province's fisheries industry develop strongly. Specifically, if before 2000, the fisheries industry mainly relied on natural exploitation, by 2022 the whole province had more than 75,350 hectares of aquaculture, with an output of nearly 300,000 tons. Thereby, contributing to the export turnover value of more than 1.04 billion USD (in 2022), significantly contributing to the economic development of the province and accounting for about 25% of the total shrimp export turnover value of the whole country.

Meanwhile, engineer Ho Quang Cua, Head of the ST rice research team, added that the field of science and technology on rice in Soc Trang province has had a glorious 30-year development process. With the technological foundation and market coordination, from tall aromatic rice, to ST3 aromatic rice with strong stems and short duration, there is ST20, then ST24, ST25 with short growth cycle (100 days), higher productivity and regional adaptability. Since then, for the first time, rice hybridization in our country has produced world-class quality and Vietnamese aromatic rice has been exported to all continents.

Promote innovation and technical improvement

Speaking at the workshop, Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat acknowledged and praised the achievements of the science and technology sector in Soc Trang province over the past 30 years. In particular, many new scientific and technological achievements and local research results have been applied to production, improving productivity, quality and efficiency, especially in the field of agricultural production. Thereby, the position and key and important role of science and technology and innovation have been increasingly affirmed in contributing to economic growth and solving challenges in all areas of social life.

With the characteristics of Soc Trang province, the Minister of Science and Technology noted that the province needs to closely and synchronously connect social sciences and humanities with natural sciences, science and technology. In particular, it is necessary to pay special attention to research activities on culture, history, and traditions of the land and people of Soc Trang, considering this as one of the advantages of the province that needs to be researched and exploited to serve socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security.

The People's Committee of Soc Trang province and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences have just implemented a cooperation program. At the same time, the Southern Regional Science Institute under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences also signed a memorandum of understanding on scientific research cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology of Soc Trang province.

Secretary of the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee Lam Van Man requested the provincial science and technology sector to focus on implementing a number of key tasks such as: strengthening cooperation with institutes, universities, and science and technology organizations to develop high-quality human resources for the province; continuing to promote science and technology and innovation to serve the development of agricultural economy, marine economy, digital economy and adaptation to climate change; attracting investment resources for science and technology, developing science and technology enterprises; promoting initiatives and technical improvements among the people; implementing registration for protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, etc.

In addition, the Secretary of the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee called on organizations and individuals operating in the field of science and technology in the province to raise their determination to research and apply science and technology to serve socio-economic development, thereby contributing to the successful implementation of the goal of building Soc Trang province into a fairly developed province in the Mekong Delta region.
