Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy, Head of the Natural Sciences Subcommittee, said that 2024 marks outstanding achievements in the field of natural sciences with effective coordination between the Ministry of Science and Technology, specialized subcommittees and UNESCO.
Notably, the stakeholders have made significant progress, from promoting international cooperation programs in the fields of biosphere and geology, to effectively implementing activities at UNESCO-sponsored Category 2 International Scientific Centers; continuing to implement the Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment Project (RAM), affirming Vietnam's active and proactive role in these fields.
Many experts believe that, in the context of Resolution 57-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation that has just been issued, 2025 will be the year Vietnam continues to promote the implementation of important strategic goals, from promoting national programs on biodiversity conservation, water resources management, to applying open science, ethics in artificial intelligence, international cooperation in the field of high technology, etc. Besides, Vietnam continues to focus on digital transformation, green transformation and sustainable development.
Deputy Minister Bui The Duy said that opening up the direction of activities for two type 2 international scientific centers to boldly undertake a number of tasks to support other countries, especially developing countries, demonstrates a proactive and responsible role in the international community.
Providing an overview of the Subcommittee's activities, Deputy Director of the Department of Social Sciences, Humanities and Natural Sciences (Ministry of Science and Technology) Nguyen Thi Thanh Ha emphasized that in 2024, Vietnam's activities within the framework of UNESCO cooperation in general and of the Natural Sciences Subcommittee in particular have achieved outstanding results thanks to the joint efforts of management agencies, specialized subcommittees, centers, etc.
In 2025, the Subcommittee will continue to implement the cooperation contents between the Government of Vietnam and UNESCO for the period of 2021-2025 in the field of natural sciences and oceanography, in the form of integrating into key national science and technology programs for the period of 2021-2025; continue to make efforts to implement specific activities, through specialized units of the Subcommittee on Natural Sciences; pilot some contents of UNESCO's Open Science Recommendation in Vietnam in specialized fields such as intellectual property, open data, open access, open technology, etc.; strengthen international cooperation on open science through the activities of the two centers; integrate the content on open science in the Draft Law on Science, Technology and Innovation; closely coordinate with UNESCO to ensure effective implementation of issues chaired by Vietnam, especially in the field of high technology, ready to put ethical issues in AI into practice; Support Vietnamese specialized subcommittees to strengthen cooperation with relevant UNESCO programs in the 2021-2025 period; strengthen regional and global cooperation in the network of type 2 centers recognized and sponsored by UNESCO...
Mr. Jonathan Baker, Head of UNESCO Representative Office in Vietnam, emphasized that Vietnam has always been a responsible, proactive, and active member, participating in and supporting many important initiatives of UNESCO. According to Mr. Jonathan Baker, the year 2025 is in the international decade for sustainable development. Currently, Vietnam is one of the leading countries in these action programs. UNESCO wishes to continue to cooperate with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Natural Sciences Subcommittee and other subcommittees to promote and demonstrate Vietnam's stronger commitment, so that Vietnam continues to be a leading country in the action program in this field.
Commenting on the tasks in the coming time, Ms. Le Thi Hong Van, Director of the Department of Cultural Diplomacy and UNESCO, Secretary General of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) suggested that UNESCO should support and contribute opinions on the Law on Science, Technology and Innovation. On the other hand, she suggested that UNESCO support localities to achieve the title of sustainable development; improve specialized subcommittees; have a training plan and a systematic strategy to bring Vietnamese experts to attend UNESCO forums and run for UNESCO's natural science agencies.
