To improve the quality and competitiveness of grape products in the market, Ninh Thuan province encourages and promotes the widespread planting of new varieties of fresh grapes and high-quality seedless grapes to increase economic efficiency and create more attraction for local agricultural tourism.
Ninh Thuan is currently the locality with the largest grape growing area in the country with more than 1,000 hectares, supplying the market with 26,000 - 28,000 tons of fresh grapes each year.
Seedless grape variety NH04-102 grown in Ninh Thuan produces long, finger-shaped fruit that turns dark black when ripe, has firm, slightly crunchy flesh, is seedless, and has a rich sweet taste.
Grape varieties are grown mainly for fresh consumption and a small amount for wine making; of which, the two main fresh grape varieties are Cardinal red grapes and NH01-48 green grapes, accounting for about 90%; the rest are NH01-152, NH01-26, NH02-97 (Syrah wine grapes) and some other grape varieties, accounting for about 10% of the area.
In order to contribute to enriching the variety structure, creating conditions for sustainable grape production, Nha Ho Cotton Research and Agricultural Development Institute (under the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences, located in Ninh Thuan) has researched, evaluated and selected a number of seedless grape varieties with many good characteristics such as high yield, good quality, beautiful appearance, suitable for the ecological conditions of the region, notably the seedless grape variety NH04-102 (also known as Black Finger grapes).
Dr. Phan Cong Kien, Deputy Director of Nha Ho Cotton Research and Agricultural Development Institute, said that the high-quality seedless grape variety NH04-102 has been officially permitted by the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) to develop production in the South Central Coast provinces since January 16, 2025. Previously, in November 2024, this grape variety was also granted a New Plant Variety Protection Certificate with a validity of 25 years.
The NH04-102 grape variety has a growing time from cutting to harvest of about 117 - 125 days (depending on the crop). The plant grows strongly, flowers easily and sets fruit at a high rate, with an average fruit weight of 4 - 5 g/fruit (average 350 - 550 g/bunch), firm fruit stems, and less shedding, making it quite convenient for long-distance transportation. It has high yield potential (11-15 tons/ha/crop, in intensive farming conditions it can reach 16 - 20 tons/ha/crop) and is quite resistant to some pests and diseases, producing 2 crops/year.
This is a seedless grape variety that can be used for drying. When ripe, the fruit is black, has high sugar content (16-20 degrees Brix), thick skin, has a characteristic flavor and beautiful appearance.
According to the assessment, the quality of the NH04-102 grape variety is equivalent to the same type of grape products imported from abroad into the Vietnamese market. NH04-102 grape products are currently purchased by traders at the garden at prices ranging from 130,000 to 220,000 VND/kg, 3 to 5 times higher than the Cardinal red grape variety and 2 to 3 times higher than the NH01-48 green grape variety.
The NH01-152 grape variety grown in Ninh Thuan has many outstanding advantages such as large fruit, firm, crispy flesh, characteristic light aroma, and turns a beautiful red color when ripe.
According to Dr. Phan Cong Kien, the Institute is building a primary garden of the NH04-102 grape variety and completing the dossier to submit to competent authorities for evaluation and recognition as a basis for providing a source of seedlings that ensure quality standards to serve the expansion of production development.
Up to now, in the Institute's grape gene pool garden, there are over 230 grape varieties of all kinds, including fresh grapes, wine grapes, dried grapes (for jam), rootstock grapes and leaf grapes.
Currently, in addition to growing new fresh grape varieties such as NH04-102, NH01-152, many farms and farmers in the area are also promoting the planting and expansion of new grape varieties in greenhouses according to the high-tech agricultural model such as: NH01-205 grapes (peony grapes), NH01-26 grapes (candy grapes), NH04-195 grapes (black summer grapes), new red grape variety NH01-16... According to calculations, the model of growing new grape varieties according to the high-tech agricultural model can earn from 500 to 600 million VND/ha/crop and from 1 to 1.2 billion VND/ha/year.
Mr. Nguyen Khac Phong - Director of Thai An Agricultural Service Cooperative (Vinh Hai Commune, Ninh Hai District) shared that to improve production efficiency and adapt to climate change, the cooperative is investing in planting new fresh grape varieties according to the high-tech agricultural model with an area of over 5 sao (5,000 m2). Compared to traditional grape varieties, new grape varieties such as NH01-152, NH04-102 have outstanding advantages in shape, eye-catching color, large fruit, crispy, firm flesh and sweet aroma, so they are very popular with tourists and the market.
In 2025, to put high-quality grape varieties into production, contributing to increasing profits per unit of cultivated area, the People's Committee of Ninh Thuan province directed the agricultural sector to coordinate with relevant departments, branches and units to strengthen coordination with localities to review, adjust and supplement grape production planning in accordance with the reality of land and growing areas; ensuring good exploitation of the potential of lands suitable for grapes.
Research institutes, agencies, and plant variety centers continue to research and perfect the technical process of grape production towards safety, quality, and environmental protection, as well as plant care and protection processes for different grape varieties.
At the same time, promote the application of scientific and technical advances in production, build a value chain linkage model, expand the area of new grape varieties according to VietGAP standards, grow grapes in greenhouses, combine the development of eco-tourism to visit vineyards, and actively promote the brand of high-quality local fresh grape varieties.
