On September 22, Hôtel Drouot (France) will organize a sale of Indochina fine arts including 19 paintings of King Ham Nghi proposed by auctioneer Lynda Trouvé, according to Drouot.com .
This is an opportunity for collectors to find some big names in the Vietnamese art community such as Vu Cao Dam, Tran Phuc Duyen, Le Pho and other artists associated with the Indochina College of Fine Arts because they were professors there such as Alix Aymé or Rector Evariste Jonchère.
The painting "Sunset in the Countryside" by King Ham Nghi was auctioned this time.
According to researcher Ngo Kim Khoi: 19 paintings of King Ham Nghi (1871-1944) found in an attic in France will also be sold this time.
After only one year in power, King Ham Nghi was forced into exile by the French government, exiled to Algiers (capital of Algeria). He learned painting and sculpture techniques from the artist Marius Reynaud. He made several trips to France under close supervision and met artists such as Foujita and Rodin. His works are extremely rare on the market. This is the first time such a significant collection has been auctioned.
According to researcher Ngo Kim Khoi, the paintings for sale were owned by Henri Aubé - a French soldier stationed in Hanoi from 1907 to 1909. It is very likely that Henri Aubé went to the tropical military hospital in Vichy for treatment, like many officers stationed in the colonies at that time.
From 1909 to 1913, King Ham Nghi also visited this medical facility regularly. It is said that King Ham Nghi and Henri Aubé developed a friendship there through their mutual friend Henri de Gondrecourt. The paintings inherited by Henri Aubé’s family remain in their private collection and are now being sold by his descendants.
The Long Road Along the River by King Ham Nghi
Mr. Khoi said that auction house Lynda Trouvé set the starting price for the paintings of King Ham Nghi from 3,000 to 5,000 euros (about 80 to 130 million VND) each. "I think this price is a bit low. However, this time it promises to be an exciting auction because the starting price is low."
Also according to researcher Ngo Kim Khoi, the auction of the painting "Chieu ta" by King Ham Nghi in 2010 left many regrets when the representatives of Thua Thien-Hue province could not buy the painting because a person successfully bid over the phone to own the painting for 8,800 euros (228 million VND). The buyer of this painting was Dr. Gérard Chapuis - a French-Vietnamese man currently living in Marseille (France).
