On the night of July 1, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attempted to attack the Crimean Peninsula, but Russian air defenses successfully repelled the attack. According to local reports, the attack targeted the eastern part of the peninsula, presumably the Crimean Bridge. Several targets were reportedly intercepted in the Kherson region and the area of the city of Kerch, Crimea.
The Ukrainian military is believed to have launched US-made Storm Shadow missiles and decoy missiles to identify the area where the Russian air defense system was deployed. Fragments of the Storm Shadow missile are believed to have fallen in the area of the village of Shelkino.
In its daily summary, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that a total of eight Storm Shadow missiles were destroyed over the past day.
Earlier, on the evening of July 1, Ukraine also carried out another attack targeting the western coast of the peninsula and Russian air defenses immediately operated in Sevastopol.
Immediately after the Ukrainian Armed Forces' attack on the Crimean peninsula, the Russian military launched a missile attack on a Ukrainian airport in response. Russian Iskander missiles targeted Kanatovo airport in the Kirovograd region, possibly hunting for Ukrainian Air Force aircraft used to attack Crimea. Explosions were heard at the airport.
The next morning, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that Russian forces had attacked Ukrainian Air Force aircraft, causing damage to the parking area and some infrastructure of the military airport, but did not provide details.
Earlier on July 1, the Russian military launched a missile attack on the military airfield in Mirgorod in the Poltava region. At least two or three Iskander missile strikes with cluster munitions were reported at the airfield. A large fire was also reported in the area.
The attack on Mirgorod airport was coordinated by drones. These aircraft were not detected by Ukrainian air defenses and were operating about 200 km from the Russian border. The released images show heavy losses for the Ukrainian Air Force.
As a result of the attack, the Ukrainian military lost six aircraft at once. Two Ukrainian Su-27s were destroyed and burned out. Four other Su-27s were severely damaged by cluster bombs.
The public video also shows fake planes painted on the parking lot to distract Russian forces, but they did not help the Ukrainian military avoid losses.
The loss of six aircraft was a heavy defeat for the Ukrainian Air Force.
