The Kyiv Independent on January 5 quoted information from the General Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine saying that the explosion occurred in the town of Shuya in Ivanovo province of Russia, seriously injuring a Russian commander, Captain Konstantin Nagayko of the artillery unit under the 112th Missile Brigade, Western Military District (Russia).
"At the time (of the explosion), this person was in the unit and is currently dying. Officer Nagayko suffered multiple shrapnel injuries to most of his organs, including his brain, and had to undergo brain surgery," HUR announced on Facebook.

According to HUR, Nagayko's unit was responsible for the missile attack on a cafe in the village of Hroza (Kharkiv province, Ukraine) on October 5, 2023, which killed 59 people and injured 5 others. Ukraine suspects that Russia likely used Iskander ballistic missiles at that time.
Ukrinform reported that Captain Nahayko was born on November 6, 1995 in Svobodny in Russia's Amur region. The officer graduated from St. Petersburg State University and the Mikhailovsk Military Artillery Academy.
HUR accused Captain Nahayko of directly participating in the military operation in Ukraine and commanding the Iskander ballistic missile strikes against military and civilian targets in Sumy and Kharkiv provinces. However, Russia has long maintained that it does not attack civilian targets when carrying out special operations in Ukraine.
The Russian side also did not comment on information related to the explosion, which according to HUR, seriously injured Captain Nagayko.
If confirmed by Russia, the attack would be the latest in a series of attacks carried out by Ukraine against key figures in President Vladimir Putin's special operations in Ukraine.
